Holly Tree Superstitions...
Discussion
We have a holly tree in our garden and all it is doing is dropping its leaves and the kids keep treading on them and I keep finding new holly shoots that I am having to dig up. I don't particularly like holly so want to cut it down. The previous owner has left behind a great branch cutting tool that I have just made good use of and cut down the lower branches. Anyway, wondering whether to try and cut the tree down myself or get someone in to help, I googled it and have found out that apparantly it is bad luck to cut down a holly tree. Apparently "no English farmer would ever cut down and burn a holly tree" from what I have read. Now, I am not superstitious but do not like to tempt fate and now wonder whether to leave it or cut it down. Has anyone heard of this superstition? Any farmers on here who would never cut and burn a holly tree? Load of old cobblers? Probably but now it's got me thinking. If something bad did happen, that may have happened anyway, I would blame it on the tree, What would you do?
Hmm just found this info:
Holly
With its shiny leaves and bright scarlet berries Holly Ilex aquifolium is probably the plant that is most associated with Christmas, it represents Christ’s crown of thorns, whilst the berries are drops of blood. It is supposed to guard against the evil eye.
Traditionally it was a symbol of eternal life although there were a lot of superstitions associated with it as well. Because it was regarded as unlucky to cut down a holly tree many were left standing whilst others trees and shrubs around them were cut down, so you may still spot one growing in the midst of a hedgerow.
Maybe I will just trim it back.....

It's dropping its leaves as that's what they do at this time of the year. "Evergreen" doesn't mean they don't drop their leaves, just that they don't drop them unless there are others to take their place, so they never don't have leaves. In a month or so it will have stopped and will be ok again until the same time next year.
I see no reason not to chop it down, make sure your chakras are aligned properly, you wear suitable crystals, you aplogize to the tree in advance and only enter the house backwards through the back door for the next 12 months and no harm should befall you.
Holly responds quite well to drastic trimming, we have an old one in the back garden that was a right mess until I first trimmed it to a pyramidal shape years ago, leaving most of it in a heap to be burnt. It came back stronger than ever and I keep it neatly trimmed which keeps the dropped leaves to the area under the tree only, as branches reach down to the ground, they tend not to stray too far or cause probelems - though I guess it's too late for that with yours.

You burnt some? That is very very bad according to the "superstition". It should never ever be burnt !
I have done a couple of hail marys and put some sandwiches under the tree for the fairies as apparently they live there so hopefully all is now well and karma is restored
I will leave it though, I have just ummm trimmed the the bottom section which I am sure will grow back at some point. But I won't be burning the pile of twigs etc. I have, will perhaps bury them instead with a few ribbons and some rose water.
