Greetings all,

Think I have finally finished spending vast amounts of dosh on my 1998 XJR.

It is in for a Dinotrol underseal and then a professional Swissvax detail with Cheshire Auto Detailing at the end of the month.
Just want to start putting some mileage on it soon, however it does need some new rubber on the front end.

It has original 18" Penta alloys and new Pirelli's on the rear. I am wondering is it still the best option to put Pirelli's on the front again, or opt for something else...cost is not too much of an issue.

What are the latest opinions out there ?

Have a look on Black Circles and Pneus on line - both have extensive tyre reviews. Don't forget Groomi's tyre wiki on PH too.

Camskill also have a lot of info, and are usually the cheapest mail order - but I think most tyre fitting companies are getting wise to how cheap they are and certainly in mid Essex have recently started charging a fortune for fitting tyres supplied by somebody else. My local Quick Fit now refuse to fit any tyre they have not supplied themselves and the specalist I've used in the past now wants £15+VAT per wheel for fit and balance eek.

Bear in mind XJs are very sensitive to tyre and wheel balance - you'll utterly ruin a good car with bad choice of tyres. Choice will depend partly on style of driving so you'll need to look for a tyre that matches what you want - If it's ultimate performance perhaps somthing like Toyo T1R Proxies might be a benchmark, ultimate comfort, possibily choose a touring tyre from Michelin or Verdesteen or the Falken ZE912 - which I'm very pleased with on my XJ - or the OE Pirellis for a reasonable all rounder with good life. There's plenty of info out there with a bit of Googling.

I just coughed for 4 Pirelli but ended up with p4000's as they had them on offer.

I seldom drive the car, but when i do im very happy with them.

Oh and howdy Steve, excellent advice as usual smile

That's good to hear; I just ordered a set for my S-Type! Although they're half the price of Pirellis they get good reviews and seem to have a reputation for quiet running (which is more important to me than Ultimate Dynamic Track Grip yada, the usual chant of PR blurb)

Yes they are smooth and quiet on most surfaces - oddly enough I've found them quiter on the high load/speed pressures then on the reduced comfort ones. Treadwear seems reasonable too I've done around 8k of mostly long distance touring on them and have around 6mm of legal tread left. No idea how they perform in extremis 'tho as that's not the sort of thing a Gentleman does.

Not in an XJ anyway - Mrs JS has a 2.0 GTI with Toyo's on it that'll do nicely for a little B road hoonage when the need arises wink

Difficult for me to make a direct comparison of Falken 912's with the OE Pirelli P6000 which most Jaguars were fitted with, I changed from a 17" rim fitted with 50 profile Pirelli tyres to a 16" one and 60 profile Falkens. If money were no object I'd put a set of Mitchelin Pilots on without hesitation, but that would have cost nearly £800 in XJ sizes eek I've recently driven 1200kms including a cross county Vmax thrash from Peniscola on the med. coast to Madrid in a hired Citroen C4 fitted with Pilots on all sorts of surfaces from slush and mud covered mountain roads to glass smooth motorways which reminded me what a superb all round tyre the Mitchelins are.

Do you think they'd have noticed if when they got the car back it was fitted with a set of Chung-Pong tyres instead?!

scratchchin Maybe not - but the chances of either my Spanish or Ryan Air's baggage allowance being equal to the task of swapping tyres and bringing the Pilots home are very remote indeed...

Thankyou or the excellent input. I get the feeling that Michelin Pilots are the best, ruling the cost out, would people be in agreement ?

Nice car, had one very similar (colour, alloys) until last week. Still in mournig for it!

You may want to consider obfuscating your reg. plate in the pic. It's not unknown for people to 'clone' cars off pics found on teh interwebs.

Yes, I had thought about blanking the registration but didn't get round to it.

Thankyou for the comment on the car, did you spot both the rear spoilers ? Very discreet and different, got em from the States.

It has the ivory interior and the intercoolers have been painted red, upgraded pulley on the newly serviced supercharger and a nice piece of induction on it, as well as cats back stainless.

Its cost a bloody fortune but, as you can tell, I am proud and the product is nearly finished.

Its hard getting rid of a cherished car, despite this car i still really miss my mint and original Maestro turbo......

Right, I am back again...on about tyres.

Phoned a main dealer and he said Pirelli P Zero Assimetrico.

I have had some P Zero Rosso's fitted to the rear after advice from a reputable tyre dealer who reckons they are better than the assimetrico's.

Thoughts on this, bearing in mind I am commited to the Pirelli......?
