Hi All, been a member for years but forgot my login so decided to start over.

Right I have a client with a 55 plate BMW M3 CS which I valeted last week. Whilst doing the interior I used some G101 on a cloth to wipe the console and steering wheel. To my horror when I wiped a few marks off the steering wheel I removed some of the paint (Spoke to BMW about this and they said this should have happened and the steering wheel must have been resprayed at some point). The owner has had this car from new and says he has never had the steering wheel sprayed.

So the bottom line is that the onus is on me to sort this out. I have contacted and company called Trimline Systems who deal with BMW UK to sort out any trim problems but they are unable to spray this as the paint has metallic pigments in it. I don't want to have to go down the route of a new steering wheel as I'm sure they don't come cheap. If i could either get the name of someone who could spray this or if I could buy the plastic cover (the top piece that goes under the airbag.

By the way the car is in Leeds.

Any help, assistance or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Jonathan

P.S. I have a photo of the damage if anyone wishes to see it. ta

Disassemble the wheel and spray it yourself?

Edit: Sorry this wasn't what you asked for but it was a thought.

What part of the wheel is it? If its just the metallic but in the bottom half, then cover it with carbon fiber vinyl or similar.

Its not too difficult to do if your patient etc.

This has crossed my mind Joe but I was looking for a more straight forward fix, that may be the last resort though.

Cheers

Thanks Colin, yeah I deal with a vinyl wrapping company in Bradford who I thought about asking if the could wrap it.

If you imagine the steering wheel as a clock, it's on the plastic piece underneath the airbag at about qtr past the hour mark (I've attached a photo to show the damage)

Thanks
Jonathan

If you are talking about the grey plastic that has the M badge on it that sits below the centre black airbag piece, then you can buy them new from bmw for about £50 ish.

Happened to me while i was cleaning mine a few years ago, though the car was under warranty & BMW replaced it with no quibble.

Hi Darreni, just added a pic of the part that's damaged, it looks like the plastic is in two parts, the bottom part has the M logo on it and the top part has the race option button on the right hand side.

£50 sounds good to me....i don't suppose you know the part number? I'll pop into the BMW dealer next week

Cheers

see here:

i believe you want part no 2.

note that the parts listing is for the M3 CSL, so get the dealer to check on the ETK that the part listed is painted the same shade of grey as the M3 CS wheel.

The pic was there a minute ago, then when I refreshed the page it disappeared. I think its the Thumbsnap software playing up.

Many thanks Darreni for your help it's most appreciated mate. I'm I right in think the CS and the CSL steering wheels are both the same and the plastic only comes in one colour? If you had to guess a price how much would you say for part No2?

Cheers

I cant see a seperate listing for the M3CS & being as the CS was a mix of parts from the std M3 & CSL i would guess its the same part, but as i said, get the dealer to check on his system.

If you take the chassis no of the car with you (visible through the glass at the bottom of the windscreen) they will ensure you get the right part.

I've no idea price wise, but i'd be suprised if it was more than £50.

Just been quoted £123.95 ex VAT for the part I'm after, seems a bit steep to me so will make a few phone calls to see how this compares....

Ah, the good old Mondeo worn steering wheel issue. Pretty standard on Mk3 Mondeos. Who'd have thought a "premium car" would suffer the same issue, eh? wink
