Maybe this winter if I'm feeling brave.

Thanks. It's the wife's. Got it 11 years ago and it is (and always has been) rust free; Jaguar maintained; and, after the initial years of expense in putting all the bits back on her which fell off (good British workmanship!), she is pretty reliable.

Originally owned by Jaguar Motors themselves and used to try out the XJRS body styling as you can see.

Impressive engine - shame you have to lift the whole thing pretty much to get to the starter motor! Even the simplest thing requires an expert hence the maintenance costs can be high when something needs doing. Right now the vents don't seem to operate very well (stuck in one setting?) but we live with it as it is at least £900 to have them remove the dash to get to the heating stuff!!

Well, I would have loaded a picture of the engine here but Thumbsnap is not playing ball right now mad

Been there done that too.

Absolutely loved it. Although I have to say if I was to buy another, it would be a late model 4.0

I had a 1993 facelifted 5.3 XJS with average mileage, yet not average maintenance costs.

Parts were expensive, labour (jag dealer) was expensive, fuel bills were horrendous. Which had nothing whatsoever to do with my regular showdowns with an E36 M3 whistle

I would go with the latest version of the model you can afford. The subtle rock when revving the V12 at idle was sublime, but day to day, not a good choice.

I loved it so much in fact that I'm still looking for a late model myself. I don't believe these will lose any more value and if you can find a late celebration model in a good colour, 5 spokes etc, in good condition (convertible a bonus) I think it'll be worth every penny you paid 5 years from now.

I have a '95 4.0 Straight Six and love her! Over 100,000 miles and rock solid so far. The 95 & 96 were the only years with the AJ16 engine, very improved over previous years. Galvanized and rust free.

Odd to think they received such flak when the first came out; the design looks stunning today

Ive put mine into storage for the time being as the last few outings it decided to spew its internal fluids out without warning...in fact Id go as far to say for the last six months the only mileage is done is from the 40 mile trip back from the garage whereby it breaks and is trailered back again!

Engine needs a complete strip down for which is probably gonna cost bega bucks, so its laid up until I can justify the expense frown

Lovely motor the V12 though

Here's a pic riding on DB7 i6 wheels

Have you not seen the one for 2k on eBay? Might even get it cheaper! It looks lovely.

we have a 6.0 V12 insignia in a custom green from the Omani flag.

was given to an omani general from the sultan, has fancy royal crest in the dials and everything

hasnt moved from the jag garage for 24 months.

something broke, had to find second hand parts in the UK, ship them over. took ages, came out of the garage about 6 months ago and we started to drive it home and the fuel pump went. back to the garage.

lovely car though when it actually moves.

I ran a 3.6 for 7 years as a second car, I also thought it would bankrupt me, but it didn't. the aircon was the only major expense. I replaced brakes and shocks all round, did the work myself. the rear brakes were a nightmare but parts cost was very sensible. I liked it so much i now run an xkr as my sensible everyday car. Do it but plaes remember there is no such thing as a cheap jag. buy a good one and it should be OK.

I must admit the "don't meet your hero's" line has rung in my head on a few occasions but its never stoppped me driving anything interesting.

I drove (briefly) a late-ish XJS V12 that had been traded in at work, I loved it! Its a proper experience, the seats are surprisingly narrow, the transmission tunnel unsurprisingly wide, feels like your miles away from your passenger.

The dash very much a work of randomness, switches definitely not were you would expect them! The view out of the narrow but wide windscreen down the long bonnet is just so far removed from modern hatches, which are all windscreen and not a lot else.

The engine was smooth as you'd expect but with instant torque, easily enough to kick the rear out when exciting a junction!
Its yet another car I would have dearly loved to have taken home and kept.

Does this help?

It is a little cramped in there.
True. Gave up on Thumbsnap and using Picasa instead, anyway, here's our engine. Interestingly yours has no branding on it.
