I just took out a personal cover with RAC, as for years I used a company through moneysupermarket (FCGB) at just £32 a car a year, however they cost me £700 when they refused to recover me home and I had a plane to catch. bds!
In the small print its "their" choice of car recovery, hotel, or tow to garage.
They offered me a hotel when I was flying that night and had to get to Heathrow.
Ive logged a complaint, but no proper reply, they are investigating.

Was in the same boat as you OP - needed relay stylee cover for me and the OH for cars and bikes. The AA with euro cover was getting to be nuts.

I've now got Britannia deluxe (or something) cover - which is relay, home start, hotels (I think) and euro cover - grand total of 84 quid! That's with the CSMA (which cost me 15 quid to join - need to be a/have been in the the civil service). However I believe it's still a bargain without the CSMA discount.

Have a look at a firm called Auto Aid. I found them through the Money Saving Expert site and used them for 3 or 4 years. Excellent cover and very cheap - the 'catch' is that you pay and then reclaim, so you need to be comfortable with paying the bills at the time they arise. They will call people out to you via a hotline, the same as any other firm, or you can book your preferred recovery agents/garages yourself.

Well worth a look, and excellent VFM.

RAC beyond doubt. i have recieved nothing but excellent service even when on two occasions called them to look at something that wasnt covered by my policy.

I simply have them as an addition on barclays bank account as part of a package.
