hi i have a 1996 vw sharan 2.0 petrol
ive fitted new full exhaust
replaced head gasket
new sparks dizzy cap rotary arm leads
petrol filter
new air box
new maf sensor
new throttle body
none of this seem to fix the problem

on idle its fine it drives fine when you floor it it pulls but only to 4000 revs andd wont go past it same thing in neutral and all gears so the car only goes 90mph thought it could be ecu but dont know

p.s does anyone know where the ecu is (been told front right under bonnet in black box and under scuttle panel in middle ) both wrong

Is the MIL illuminated? And if not, does it correctly illuminate and then out go when you switch the ignition on?

This sounds like the ECU is in the "limp home" state, so getting the diagnostic codes read would be the first thing to do before spending more money on random parts. The hall sensor within the distributor is a common fault that causes these symptoms.

The cam position sensor is the "hall" sensor I mentioned in my post. Failure of this will put the ECU into a "limp home" state which will limit maximum RPM.
