Hi, this wednesday i became an owner of a used ford focus zetec climate 2.0 tdci, 58k on the clock. checked a few reviews before buying and all came back pretty good. i was happy with the car so i bought it. 2 days after collecting a red warning light came on the dash with the message 'engine systems fault' the car drives ok, no loss of power the one thing i have noticed is when pulling off about 30 yards after you start there is a clunk (sounds like the exhaust hit a speed bump) but comes from the engine. as i say the car drives ok besides this.

i have taken the car back to the garage where i bought it who said they will sort it out but after reading more complaints it seems like this is a common fault to which very few people have had satisfactory repairs and the fault reoccurs very soon after. i am reluctant to collect the car when they have 'sorted it' after hearing so many complaints and all seem to happen shortly after the warranty expires. the garage i bought it from offer a 3 month purchase warranty but i didnt buy a 12 month additional one for £200. they did offer it to me today when i took it back but as i said i am thinking of just cutting my losses and leaving it with them i didnt bother. just unfortunate i gave them a perfectly good vectra sri and 150 quid non refundable deposit.

anyway what i was wondering is what this fault message could indicate, the message seems quite general and obviously could be a number of things once they analyse the fault codes etc. i looked over other forums but everybody has had different parts replaced and none of them seems to fix the problem. is the new ford focus just a s**t car with cheap electrical equipment that is going to cause me no end of problems and a massive repair bill.. i mean i like the car but 7 grand isnt worth paying if im going to be footing a ridiculous repair bill for the next 5 years before i even pay the car off. i know besides there 3 month warranty there is a 6 month period from date of purchase where the car can be rejected if fault which it clearly is but i just dont know if it is all worth the bother

Sure the clunk after pulling away isn't the ABS self test?

I know STs all do this, wouldn't be surprised if vanilla cars do too.

vanilla cars? could be i didnt know it did that. ohwell i guess ill have to wait and see what the garage say, hard to be optimistic when the thing throws out an engine fault within the first 2 days tho.
