I'm looking at buying a Mazda Mx5 when i turn 18, i currently drive an astra and just fancy something different.

Would i be able to get classic car insurance? Most people are telling me that i have to be 21 but i thought i'd confirm this with you guys

Thanks
Dan

Most do indeed require you to be 21 but there are ways around this..

but IMHO.. an MX5 is NOT a classic car yet!

C'mon, the mk1's about 20 years old now! People say the original beetle's a clasic and they stopped making that in 2003!

Apparently the websites say 21, but if you phone them (Footman James in particular!) they will quote you smile

Don't forget that you will need to have the car garaged too. Or at least all the classic quotes for mine impose that condition.

Footman James will give you a quote if the car is insurance group four or below. I don't think the MX-5 is this low.

Other classic car insurance companies (Adrian Flux, Lancaster etc) will give you a quote but it'll be higher than an ordinary company because of your age.

Why not see if any of the car clubs have an insurer 'onboard'

I insured my Minor through the club (think it was AON) at 17Y.O. and that was back in 2003

Most of the time to get classic insurance its must be a second car, limited milage under 5000mpa and vehicle must be kept in a garage. Thats not set in stone but thats the way most insurers are.

You can still apply for insurance regardless of if its classic or not. So the car does not need to be a 2nd car, or contain age restrictions, or have to be garaged.

Just phone around and see what you get.

I was insured with Classic Line when I was 18.

Wasn't on a classic car though. They were the cheapest by far at the time. IIRC I had a limited mileage though, possibly 5000.

Hi, I do work at flux, any problems give me a shout. If you call up for a quote make sure you say you're a Pistonheads member because that can save up to 15%.
