Another what car - my smoker was stolen!!!
Discussion
Evening all.
I need to replace my old Jag XJ which got stolen. Only a short term car while I sort out the insurance so the rules are max of £1k, mildly interesting, barge must be an auto but hppy to go for non-barge. 2, 4, or 5 doors are fine so basically looking for the most interesting sub £1k car that can be run daily for a few weeks and then either kept or sold on when the insurance comes through.
Looking forward to some ideas as I am a little stumped and can't think of much!
Cheers

How about an Alfa 166? I've just bought a 3.0 V6 which drives well and sounds fantastic.... Granted not everything actually works but it's unusual, it makes me smile / laugh when I drive it and there are a good few around for your budget
How much does one need to spend for a decent one and how reliable are they? I do like them...Different enough?

suit enthusiast,
Whenever I see that phrase it sends shivers through my wallet. I read it as "suits someone who's willing to chuck money at it and doesn't mind skinning a few knuckles every evening for the next 11 months before the next MOT. Tho' I'm sure that one's not a lost cause, that phrase doesn't fill me with confidence.
So I collected my new smoker today. One rather lovely Jag X300, 3.2 sport 1997 car. Half leather interior which is oddly more supportive than the all leather, 150k, stunning condition inside and out, just had the head gasket replaced and head and valves sorted, new-ish zorst and even a heated front screen which is a nice touch. Even the original stereo is in place and working. Tax until December and MOT until about the same time.
Problems - it ran rough but then has been unused for some months but after a motorway run it seems to be running perfectly. Wheels need a balance and the sun roof seems to be stuck. It may potentially need a new air flow sensor or something but not certain yet. The remote locking did not work but has now been sorted for the princely sum of £2.00 and the boot does not unlock on the central locking but does open from the switch inside the car. So really only the sunroof and possibly a new airflow sensor now.
Owner passed away and the car was being sold by his step son who was an utter pleasure to deal with and was so honest in his advert that we struggled to find anything we could get him down on price on! The car is really in lovely condition and was clearly much loved by it's previous owner.
And the price for all this lovely, oddly sporty waftiness I hear you ask? £600. Great car, great vendor and even a jolly nice drive home with a mate in a 3.2 V8 following me (he had kindly driven me up to see the car and looked it over as I am a technical moron and he knows what the oily bits all do!). I have had worse days :-)
