eBay - is paypal a safe payment method if it's a scam?

Guys

Bid been accepted on an expensive item that is in the USA. I am just a little concerned about the seller even though he is "ID Approved" . He is now looking for payment and he will ship the item to my business in the USA.

If I pay with PayPal - and then it turns out to be a scam (ie the item never existed/never ships) - can I get my money back from PayPal ??

ISTR that buyer protection only covers items sent to your registered address - not to other addresses, unless that's what the "gift" option does.
