Hi everyone.

Wondering if you can help. Ok my mother who has been with her bf for 20 years has decided to get married next year and is looking for a venue.

Now the challenge is trying to find somewhere on a shoestring budget but that is not too ropey or a spot for the local chav weddings.

I'm thinking of maybe a small indy hotel somewere or even a large holiday home prehaps?

All locations considered and the lower the price the better.

Thanks in advance

I don't know what a budget cost is, but I do know that a lot of inner town hotels now offer 'wedding for a grand' venues, which includes ceremony, photos, meal and evening do.

OK, you get what you pay for......but a grand is a grand!

Yeah obviously we know we wont get a 5 star hotel or anything but at same time want to avoid a dive.

I found this place which for price and location seems good. Though its still at higher end of budget. Might have to convince her its worth it.

Still open to any suggestions!

The very happiest wedding I ever went to was my brother`s - Village Hall - £30 & catering from the local pub. Disco from local lad for a few beers.
Worth thinking about what the wedding means - a colleague had to fork out over £1000 to act as a best man in a far away place no-one knew......

Completely agree. Best wedding I went to was at Harrogate registry office followed by a knees up at wine bar afterwards.

Weddings are all about getting all your friends together to celebrate with a large helping of food and drink.

Try some local village halls, ours is up for rent for £9per hour with free use of the kitchen attached, recommended DJ is a local lad who does it for fun and a pack of beer.

As a recently 'retired' Village Hall 'manager' I would recommend that option.

You can take total control of every little element. The only thing is that you need to be willing to put in the preparation to make the day what you want it to be. Lots of things to do - Morrisons do free glass hire to serve your wine. A local brewery or pub will supply a cask of beer and pump.

There are plenty to choose from to get the venue size and location right. Ours has a nice grass area outside - some are not a lucky. And for say £200 you could get the place from Friday night (set up) to Sunday morning (clean up). Offer it as a donation - any savvy Hall Treasurer will get another £50 Gift Aid back from HM Gov't to help Hall finances.

The only restriction will be that you are probably looking at a buffet style reception - not a sit down meal. And of course you will be expecting you guests to help with serving, tidying, cleaning etc.

The only thing I would say not mess with - unless you are totally not interested - you only get one chance in the church. A guy at work who is marrying next year has worked out that church is cheaper than hotel weddings etc (locally).

And use connections - does anyone know anyone with a posh or classic car. Whilst some folks do it for money, many would love the opportunity to show off their car. (Just to get back to a true PH topic). Have a good one.

Though my dad used to live in Wooley nr barnsley and that had one I think. Plus would be ironic as its my mum getting re-married. lol

I recently went to look at a place called Cubley Hall in Penistone.

http://www.cubleyhall.co.uk/Cubley/Home.html

I've not seen anywhere cheaper for a traditional wedding type venue. As with all wedding do's though, a lot depends on how much booze you're going to be supplying.....it's (relatively" good value there.
I also checked out a local golf club which was even cheaper. They're don't advertise for weddings and so were a fair bit cheaper and were doing food for around 20 quid per head.

Two best weddings I went to were my brother in laws and mine. Common theme was that it was in a back garden.

Ours was obviously better, we had a jazz band £400, adult bouncy castle with pudgel (spelling?) sticks, giant connect 4, jenga £150 did a giant BBQ and provided all the booze which we bought from supermarkets whenever it was on offer.

Cheap as it can be done, loads of fun and relaxed.

We also took everyone off to a local retaurant by coach from the house for traditional wedding breakfast, which wasn't cheap but we could have not had that bit.

The wife's wedding dress got filthly from the bouncy castle and dancing in the garden and ended up being help on by saftey pins which did raise a couple of eyebrows as we walked through the hotel where we stayed that night.

Village hall sounds like a similar idea with the advantage of shelter should it rain.

Personally I don't like wedding discos but that is personal choice.

Seconded. Always was a good venue, well run. Not been in for a few years though. Does Mick McCarthy still visit?

Thanks everyone. Found somewhere not too far from home too.

She has booked the Gomersal Lodge Hotel. I saw mixed reviews online about this place but its just been taken over by new owners and after meeting them and having a tour yesterday we feel good about it.

Anyway to cut a long story short got a fantastic price and got moved from the hotel to the marquee for no extra.

30ppl with a couple drinks and toasting drink and food (buffet) £800 all in - on a Thursday.

And here is a link to pics of the venue. Obv with 30 ppl we wont use all of the marquee just a section of it walled off for us.
