so I just called my supplying dealer for the cost of an oil service on my run of the mill 325i... just oil a filter and some labour... outside of central london...

£226 :-)

so, i have an extended BMW warranty and it seems the cost of that is the warranty plus being ripped off on every service too!

Off to an independent methinks.

I was quoted £180 on an E46 coupe, 5 years ago.

My local indy did it for £90.

Yup, bloody joke. They'll do the same service on an e46 for just over £100 too. They don't tell you that you having a warranty actually makes them more money than the price of the warranty do they wink

BMW dealers websites seem to be saying £115 for E46 4cylinder £129 for 6 cylinder
e.g

Please be aware that getting it serviced at an indie will invalidate your extended warranty.

Something i had clarified when i extended the warranty on my 335d.

//Ask them how much if u supply the oil.

I heard a story form a friend about BMW service depts.

Said friend changed jobs to got work for a BMW main dealer as a spanner monkey. First day on the job an old guy comes in with a 3 series, pulling to the left.

So they take the car for a drive and indeed it is slightly pulling to the left, so get back to the garage and check it over can't find anthing wrong with it apart from the tyre pressures being a bit low.

Mechanic goes to service manager and tells him, Service manager said that's no good. Told him to go and put to new tyres on it.

When the guy comes to pick the car up, he gets changed for 2 new tyres, and a full suspension alignment check.

All it needed was the tyres pumped up.

Machanic never retruned to the garage.

Apparently the demands for making money in the service dept mean a lot of work is charged for even when not needed.

Good enought reason nover to use BMW.

I've had a number of poor experiences with BMW dealers, but I've also has a few good ones.

I received a very good level of service from Douglas Park BMW in Glasgow, for example.

Bah! Amateur!

Took mine in for a handbrake cable and a new battery.
2 weeks later handed a bill for 3000 quid.
And no - they didn't throw in a free set of alloys.
I'll never buy another BMW personally as long as I live.

These stories are rife with every manufacturer and most main dealers- it's not really fair to point fingers just at BMW, although I doubt they are any better than the rest of them.

I really doubt that is actually the case. If it was, why did you bend over and take it? They must have cleared the work with you first right?

My 6 series needs a oil and brake fluid change due to age as oposed to mileage, car is well out of warranty so is it worth going back to BMW or get an indy?

What will it do to the value not having the BMW stamp in the book?

Don't think anyone can answer that question for you.

You'll get hammered if you try and trade it in at a bmw garage. If you sell privately you it may take a little longer to sell, it may not. If you sell to an indy, they'll prob knock a few hundred off the price.

My 2 cents. I'm going non BMW from now on, car's done 80K miles so anyone who would buy it probably isn't going to be from the "must have FBMWSH" camp.

If you think that is only an issue in BMW dealers, you are very mistaken.

No it won't.

Look up the block exemption rules set out by the office of fair trading in 2003.

i think that only applies to the initial warranty offered. The OP has extended warranty, and manufacturers and warranty companies can apply their own rules to these (as Porsche do), stopping you from renewing the warranty if it goes out of the network.

Only applies to new cars under the manufacturers new car warranty period, not extentions on those warrantires or AUC warranties that BMW offer, as those warranties are insurance backed.

Full details on the BMW thread.

BMW take car - break various expensive components (given car was undriveable without the components it's clear they broke them).

Wife was told that it needed to be done but that BMW would probably cover under good will payment so not to worry just authorise them to go ahead, or arrange for a tow truck to take it away to someone else and pay them a considerable sum for getting this far...

Wife okayed work - as desperate to get car back (organising sisters wedding).

On collection of car - no goodwill payment(suprise) and 3k bill.

So yes it was agreed if in my opinion in a rather underhand way.
