LT77 Gearbox Reversing lights switch

Just a quick question - my reversing lights have packed in (V8S) and I've shorted the wires together at the switch connectors and they come on so it must be the switch.
Is there anything scientific about this or is it just a case of getting one from dimmers (£10+vat) and replacing it?
I tried screwing it onto the gearbox another turn or so to see if it was the adjustment but they still don't work, they worked fine 2 1/2 years ago when I started the body off
Its been indoors the whole time, though I did give the gearbox a good dowsing in parts washer fluid to clean off the oil slick, could this have contributed or is it best not to think about it too much and just fit a new switch?
When I fit the new switch I assume there's some sort of measurement in terms of how far it screws into the casing - can someone give me a clue?
Reversing lights aren't part of the MOT are they??

As for MOT,if they are fitted, they must work.....

Mine haven't worked for the last 3 MOTs after I changed the switch but it quickly packed in and I couldn't be arsed to fix it again.

As for MOT,if they are fitted, they must work.....
Working reversing lights are not an M.O.T. requirement.
