Looking to put a swing for children in my garden

The area is currently plain mud and needs to be changed to something SOFT but also hard wearing. The default position is to turf it but it would be awkward to maintain/cut with a swing there, reasonably expensive and will wear down where peoples feet hit the floor

Other considerations

fake turf - probably too expensive

wood bark stuff - as its loose it will probably end up all over the garden and i think its liable to smell

any other ideas?

SWMBO bought some of that stuff you see on green grocers shelf, like astro turf but not. It was about £6 for 2 sqm but probably wont withstand too much ''foot abrasion''

Isn't that just chewed up tyres? It's certainly adequate, no idea where you get from or how much it'd cost.

Mrs BFB used to run nurseries and reports this material as being very expensive

I used chewed up tyres. I can't remember where I got it from now, but I'll find out and let you know. It come loose in a big 'hippo' bag all cleaned with any wire removed. It is like the bark stuff thou as it does end up outside the area you want it to stay in. Don't use sand, it'll become the local toilet for all your neighbours cats.
