Anyone else catch this?

It conflicted fairly heavily with some other shows I had seen, but it was certainly interesting how they went about making their findings.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Recently I saw a show and some information which indicated that in fact most Gladiatorial events were not to the death at all. The Gladiators had too much time and money invested in them to just die or have a severe chance of death in each combat, so as such it was a fight to injury. The Gladiators were then patched up properly. The theory also posited that some Gladiatorial battles were undertaken with wooden weapons in order that no serious injury was inflicted - again due to the sheer costs of the gladiators and because they felt that some Gladiators had survived for 10-20 years and this wasn't too likely if all fights were to the death.

However, last night it seemed to suggest that most combats were to the death, though they did also note that one gladiator had been around for about 20 years......

All based on the skeletons found, I think based on what they found here and what they have found elsewhere the regions did things differently.

I think the Gladiator superstars put on shows but these seemed to be the Spaticus type of slave Gladiators.

Gladius fodder.

Are you trying to say Spartacus or Spasticus there? Two very different stories.

Yes, that is an interesting point. Perhaps it was a commerative event or similar where they were to fight to the death. Would be interesting to see if they got more info from the other 69 odd bodies though!

Perhaps the fellow who had been around 20 odd years thought he'd win! Though I suspect they didn't have a huge amount of choice in the matter.

I do wonder if our crime rate would be lower if the criminals were placed in a pit with some tigers.......
