Schoolgirls raising hemlines, lowering standards.
Discussion
It would not be difficult for schools to activley solve this issue...
When I was at shcool (not all that long ago) if you came to school with the incorrect uniform you were sent home to rectify it.... repeat offenders were suspended...
Therefore the uniform on the whole was neat and tidy..
However a lot of local schools around here obviously dont deal with things the same way... a UNIFORM is exactly that... it should be a way of removing social class and fashion from the classroom and used as a tool to instill values and discipline... again, this would not take much to achieve..
But instead it just seems to be a "tick" in the box that they are wearing roughly the right uniform...
It is, quite frankly quite strange to see 14 year old girls with hemlines so high they are practically wearing a belt.... I dont get why this has even become a problem! Schools need to get it dealt with!

I have thought that, You'll often see shorter skirts on schoolgirls then in the pub on a saturday night.
I remember my school trying to add bits into the rules saying mustn't be higher than the knee, but that was almost followed for a few weeks, then ignored.
except for the goths, who'd where a full length Morticia....

This isn't anything new - when my wife was at school in the 70's she said they wore their skirts so short their ties stuck out underneath them.I try to get her to dress up like that now, but she's not so keen.

The problem is that it's unenforceble: according to my other half, who went to a private school, their rule was that when kneeling down the skirt had to touch the floor over their knees.
Apparently all of the girls wore skirts that did this for any spot checks, but they simply rolled up the bottom to make them shorter at all other times.

The thing is.... just like wearing ties properly... if you stop the students and tell them off regularly enough they realise that its to much of an effort to wear their uniform incorrectly so start to get the message... as soon as you relax this enforcement, the uniform falls appart...Apparently all of the girls wore skirts that did this for any spot checks, but they simply rolled up the bottom to make them shorter at all other times.
Why is it that primary school students who start in year 7 at secondary schools are perfectly tidy for a few months until they see what they can get away with..

To a certain extent I agree with you though - if the teachers invoked a zero tolerance policy on anyone even suspected of wearing too short a skirt, if only for an instant, as they're perfectly capable of doing in a school environment, then it would pretty quickly stop causing a problem. However, that takes time and effort from the teachers, which on the whole they probably believe could be better spent doing other things.

Taleban governance by any other name.
No really, you used to be able to punish people for not sticking to the dress code. Now you can't.
I'm sure at your school there was a dress code, that was punishable when not adhered to. I guess that must have been Taliban governance, or are you Paul Dacre

A friend of mines daughter goes to King James school 6th form in Knaresborough and one of her reasons for choosing it was because of the skirt they wear.
It is a white and red tartan (and must have been chosen by a guy as part of the uniform) and the girls wear them really short and they are a road safety hazard!
