Well fk me if they havent turned up a trillion bucks worth of minerals in Afghanistan.

Which they already knew was there from research done during the Soviet occupation.

For fks sake dont tell them about the last of our coal resources.

If the Soviets found out this, why has nobody paid to mine there yet?

Why, if all of that was known available since Soviet occupation time, has nobody (Russians, Chinese, etc.) not paid what would have been a bargain price and set something up?

Paid to whom? Who controls Afghanistan and would be more than happy for a foreign power (company) to come in a set up operations there?

What you need is some law & order in Afghanistan, then you can send in the companies to extratc the resources - have you not seen Avatar? wink

It's been a constant warzone hasn't it? If the USSR had successfully propped up Afghans communist government they would no doubt reap the rewards. Likewise the US can prop up Karzai and reap the rewards?

Yes but only because of power vacuums. Stability would have come, to some extent I think, if money and employment sprang up from this. To your point, I hope we do get the advantage of the resources. The Afghans will surely benefit from the money that will come and we the from the resources. Remember, "we" in that country are more than just the U.S.

What's a trillion dollars of minerals compared to a never ending supply of opium? Can't see the mad mullah's buying into the whole mining gig.

So did we go in to get those responsible for 9.11 and other terrorist attacks or did we go in to secure resources? Such is the nature of Islamic extremism surely it is very foolish to assume that you can invade a country and BAM the terrorists are no more. This type of thing isn't governed by geographical boundaries. The Taliban would never have got to the level of being able to really threaten us as they were too busy blowing up buddhas and shooting each other in stadiums. An NCB warfare programme needs a certain amount of organisation, stability and law and order to succeed, nothing they ever had and would ever have gained. You don't need to be in a position of power to mastermind a 9.11 style attack. There could have been the possibility of overspill into neighbouring nations but we could have just offered them backup as we are doing now. What we have done in Afghanistan IMO is colonised it to gain resources under the guise of global security.

This is in addition to the Oil and vast Gas reserves. Then you have the importance (value) of establishing 'safe' passage of energy from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan down to a port.

This Reuters article speaks of some pretty serious Chinese mining investment.

The Chinses also invested heavily in the new port of Gwadar

All the more reason to not self-hate for gaining some advantages ourselves IMO. Again, "ourselves" being the West.
