I've been looking for a few weeks at getting a weekend toy, and have previously contacted a few sellers who explained that the engine has been swapped since 1st being registered (usually for reasons of faults or wanting more power).

If the seller hasn't yet registered the change with the DVLA, but can provide paperwork to show where the engine came from, am I safe to buy and notify the DVLA myself after getting a V5 in my name ? Am I obliged to notify the DVLA ?

Any advice welcomed

The actual installed engine size (cc) and number should be on the log book, its not hard to change, cost of a stamp.

DVLA do seem to be asking for certified proof on some occasions though, say a 2 litre pinto engine swap to a bike engine that would change its tax price band, whenever I have "downsized" I have just included a headed letter from my local MOT station stating engine number xxxxxx with a capacity of xxxx cc is installed into xxxx car chassis number xxxx. Log book as always come back with new details no delays or questions asked.

If someone as swapped the engine in their car but CBA to change the details on the log book have they looked after the car with the same attention to detail ?

Personally if the engine number on the log book was different to the one fitted then I would want it correcting before I purchased, don't want to get lumped with a stolen lump ?

Jon explains it in the exact way I interpret the rules.

DVLA insisted the hand written receipt I had from a breakers for my replacement engine was not suitable so I also had to get my MOT station to provide written evidence.
In my case I knew exactly where the engine came from and was shown the V5 of the vehicle it came from.

In your case you have no way of knowing if the engine fitted is stolen and if this is the reason DVLA have not been informed.

The engine in the vehicle in question I believe came from a reputable source that should be easy enough for me to check independently, and additionally evidence from the garage that fit it.

Well see how the paper work looks when I view that car.

Many thanks for the info.
