Saddle bag / Frame bag

I'm a bit new to all this cycle stuff, I need to know what you MTB people use in the way of a Saddle bag to carry spare tubes, puncture repair kit, and tools. I have seen two types of bag; ones that go under the saddle, and triangular shaped ones that fit against the frame, are there any benefits of either or is it just personal preference?
I'm looking for something that’s not too big, can stay on the bike permanently, and not get in the way.
Any sugesstions?

I've done a repair 'in the field' using it and it worked fine. Pretty top value, or so it seems to me anyway.

The one's that secure to the top frame are used in Triathlon/Ironman - Bento boxes :-)

As I've got a Fizik saddle I use the ICS system so a neat little bag clips in to the saddle's "slot" that carries small multitool, levers, one spare tube. All food in the jersey with mobile phone and emergency/tea cash.

Job done.

I have a frame bag and it'll take a mini-repair kit, multitool, keys and phone happily; would struggle to get a tube in it. Fine for local rides but my next purchase will be a saddle bag I think.

Most MTBers use Camelbaks (or equivalent) to chuck stuff in rather than frame / seat bags.

I have a simple Bontrager under-saddle pack which contains a good TopPeak multitool with tyre levers, a small multiheaded spanner (for on the fixie so I can actually get the wheel off!) and a couple of innertubes. That combo has done me fine through various issues (punctures, cleats on road shoes coming loose, etc).
