right all, i am now free of motoring finance. just sold my 123d, so am 375pm better off.

im gonna venture into actually OWNING my car.

so budget for this 1st one is 2k.

does not have to practical as im buying the wife the 'family' car.

its only going to be used commuting 5 miles to work and back, then hooning about abit at the weekends.

what do you suggest?

my 1st thought is a 205 GTI, should be able to find a nice clean example for 2k.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1761764.htm

cheers.

i'd consider a xsara vts (one of my default answers). post facelift cars look hideous but the earlier ones look 'fine'.

gti-6 with a 5 spd gearbox. i am sure for £2k you'd get a good one.

ideally at lower end of expenditure one would go jap. the cars i actually like are a bit over budget but you could entertainthe idea of a square (as in final model before they binned them) Prelude..?

Good work ! I'm sure you'll find something for £2k that will put a big smile on your face (bigger still, knocking you don't have to worry about repayments and/or damage etc)...

I know it's predictable, but go and look at an MX-5, HUGE fun and £2k bags you a beaut. smile
ive always taken the mx5 comment with a pinch of salt.....until now.

are they really that good?

which version should i be looking out for?

jap or euro?
1600 or 1800?

id certainly prefer an unmodded car.

I used to have a Xsara with the 2.0 16v engine, 137bhp version, not the 167bhp version, or whatever the output was. Cheap car, was cheap for a reason. Sold it on double quick time. Seats were the most uncomfortable EVER. Was an awful car. Was fully colour coded in silver and I thought I was getting a lot of car for the money, but it was a false economy...

just had a peak and the vts, and its not really for me. i'd rather have the 306 gti6 tbh.

i like the prelude idea though

(fair enough iy you owned a similar model but) it depends on the context. the vts seats are reasonably sculpted. and the 'starter for 10' was a 205 gti - hardly hewn from granite.. smile

coolio.
tbh gt16s are so cheap now there's a reasonable chance of getting a 'fair' one of those...

within £2.5k you'd find a reasonable 2.0 manual i reckon. maybe not with the loverly jubberly interior but fair chance it'd have 'telephone dial' wheels...

not as sporting but a nice car. i love prefacelift 156s.

if you're happy to go this route..have you thought about taking a punt on an e36 328?

If you like 205's, have you considered a mk2 golf GTi?

I love them, so a little bias but 2k should get you a pretty good one! I think they're stunning, as long as you keep it in good nick you won't lose any more on it, and if you have it a while it may even be worth a few pennies more when it comes to selling it. Get an unmolestered one (a lot have been lowered etc). I personally like the small bumber 8v, but the 16v is faster and the big bumper most find more appealing apparently. I've heard (from an old VW mechanic friend of a friend) that the 16v aren't as reliable as the 8v, but I have no first hand expeience. The engine is really really easy to work on as it simple and everything is easy to get at. I didnt have a GTi, but I have had mk2 and I did a whole load of stuff that I can't even begin to attempt on my current car.

Just a thought.

ETA: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1717626.htm nice 16v

this has the downside of an almost complete fARsh ( hehe )but could be reasonable and well under budget.

Depends what you call Leggy, mines done 142,000. Fsh and no signs of rust.

you do have to be lucky to find decent ones though. mileage doesnt really come into it, as long as its not rusty your onto a winner!!

Lots of choice, depends what you want and are after.

MR2's are often seen as sweeter handling than an MX5. If you want something more brutish then a V8 powered TR7 is probably doable.

There's a 3.8 supercharged V6 T-Bird on ebay if a fast big GT style coupe appeals.

Hard to find but Fox body Mustangs about at this money, 5.0 OHV for the pony car experience.

Rover 200 BRM for a more modern comfy hatch. Pretty quick, close ratio box and a LSD.

MG ZS180 a fine handling V6 powered hatch/small saloon. Also still fairly new and low mileage.

Ford Puma as a fun small fwd coupe.

MGF, you'll get more F than 5 for your money at this price range.

Impreza Turbo's are down to this sort of money nowadays too.

BMW e30 325 or e36 328 are possible too.

smile

If your not bothered about sport either, Knock £500-1000 off the price also....
