Hello all,bit lost on this one..Want to take my (somewhat) elderly folks on hols.

Decided on La Rochelle. What I'm after is a v.good hotel and food, some pleasant walks and

a town to wander around at night.(me,obviously!)

Any help greatly appreciated.

stayed here 4 years ago:

richelieu

on the Ile de Re, which is only a few miles from La Rochelle - there is a toll bridge to the island, but walking/cylcing is easy on the island - we hired bikes from the hotel and had a lovely day touring the island.

(only know it's 4 years as it was during the last world cup - in fact watched the final in the hotel!)

La Rochelle very busy and touristy.

Ile de Re gorgeous and highly recommended. Some very nice hotels around St Martin
(sort of the capital) which is very buzzy at night. By day, lots of easy walking around the whole island.
La Rochelle airport tiny and easy access to the island as it is right by the bridge. Taxi to the island is very expensive, so hire a car at the airport.
We've just had a four day holiday there, stayed at L'Ocean, Le Bois en Plage, and had a magical time. Couldn't recommend it more.
