After giving away my hybrid/leisure Bianchi Doss 5200, I disliked it that much! I am again looking to buy a bike for my daily short commute. I have been offered a Cannondale Scalpel 1000 2002 model for £500. Ability wise the bike is overkill for my very modest needs but is it a better buy than anything £500 can buy new?

Yes. I've had a jekyll 4000sl since 2002 (it was bike of the year 2001) and it's nothing short of mint. They made Cannondales properly back then smile
