In my effort to get a quote for insurance on the C5 - a question they ask alot is about a Thatcham Catagory 1 or 2 alarm....

Does anyone know if the C5 has a Cat 1 (alarm + immob) or Cat 2 (immob only)....

I found this too - but how does this match to Thatcham?.....
"GM's innovative PASSlock® II theft-deterrent system is standard on the Corvette. PASSlock® II is a totally passive system: only your special coded ignition key starts your Corvette. Further standard anti-theft devices are a programmable horn and lights alarm, a visible vehicle identification number and a laser-etched VIN Plate."

Also they ask if it is an import....
Do you respond:
- No UK Spec (but it is a US car)
- Euro Model (UK Spec)
- Euro Model (Non-UK Spec)
- Japanese Import
- US Import

Many thanks

Hi Mark - still investigating a C5 eh? If you are still intending to wait until June, try Germany nearer the time as a correctly imported Euro car will get the GM three year warranty or whatever is left on it. There are some new ones over there but they are already being discounted and if you are not fussy, you may get a bargain. I have just ordered one at £10,000 off list price and I will get the 3 year warranty.

As regards your insurance question, the more honest you can be the better. I doubt if they would know the difference between US, UK or Euro spec anyway. My view is you don't mess with insurance company proposals - it is in their nature to investigate and (dare I say it) contest claims and non-disclosure would have been one of the 10 commandments if they had their way. In this day and age of everyone suing each other you need the support of your insurance company.

Hi Richard,

Yes still looking around - in that sort of mood of shall i, shan't i..... so its all back to the numbers and what costs what etc....

I tried to look for some German dealers the other day on the net - but my german ain't the best so finding a dealer is a little hard.... Got any good links?

I don't think I can afford a new one (£25K) is about my limit at the moment, so second hand ones are probably what I can get? Do the dealers only do new, or do they have older stock?

Tks for the tips on the insurance.

Cheers

Mark

My Euro C5 sold new in UK came with an additional Chevrolet alarm manual (printed for Vauxhall) that says "meets the criteria as a Thatcham Category 1 - issue 2 Security Product". I'm not convinced it's actually fitted to my car though.

Right - here goes.

Firstly for the German equivalent of Top Marques etc log onto:
www.corvetteforum.de/
and look for mobile.de down the left hand side. All those sites have Vettes for sale but Mobile.de is the best.

For translations try:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/

For German dealers log onto GM.com and under country you will find all dealers listed.

I can't speak German either, but ended up mailing 40 traders from Mobile.de. Using the translation site we could communicate quite easily.

Have a look at the HM Customs website for info re VAT etc.

I have spent a lot of time this week researching Germany so if you need any more advice, e-mail me privately.

Above all, just get out there and buy one - you will not regret it.

Does your alarm use the horn or a siren? When they fit the upgraded alarm you get new key fobs, when we got home we were playing around with it all, not really knowing what we were doing and had both alarms going off at one stage. Bit embarrassing but we did find out the base alarm uses the horn and the indicators kind of twinkle when you set it, where as the new one uses a siren and the lights just flash once to arm and twice to disarm. I think the LED in the centre console was added by the upgrade also but not certain on that one.

Yes you're right about that, there ought to be a different fob confirming my suspicion that I've just got standard locking. When my car was shipped from USA to Belgium just about every loose part got knicked including the driver's manual. It looks as though by the time it was replaced the UK spec had moved on and hence I was supplied with an alarm/immobiliser manual that's not right for the car.

By the way. If you ever need a new fob for a C5 the standard Euro key fobs are significantly different from the USA version and not interchangeable.

Most of the specialist American car insurers make no distinction in relation to the origin of the car. Most of them don't even make a distinction between the type of Corvette, not even a Z06.

Two recent quotes with all NCB retained on my current Camaro but "acknowledging" my full NCB status:

Flux- 2002 Corvette Z06 - 3000miles p.a , £500 excess £575 fully comp. plus MUST have Thatcham Cat 1 alarm.
Hill House - 2001 Corvette Z06 4000miles. £250 excess, no additional alarm requirement
