I expect most people know this, but it is a new discovery to me. When it is safe to cross the road, a knurled knob on the underside of the pelican crossing control rotates, to let the blind know it is safe to cross. Amaze your friends & family! i'm easily amused...

Well blow me! I have perfect sight but never seen a knurled knob on a pelican before.

There is no fun in truth. Tell them if you spin it it makes the man go green quicker. It's there as a shortcut for the 5-o's so they can cross roads quicker.

There is also one on the under side of some Esso petrol pumps, if you press the knob in you also get an audio readout of how much you've put in your tank. But don't go telling everyone, it's a secret.

But how do they know that there's a vibrating knob there?

In fact, how do they know where the button is? Or even that there is a crossing there?

Anybody else think blind people are really just on a massive piss-take?

Blind people don't drive!!

... The guide dogs do that bit, they just put the petrol in.

If you hold it still when the green man is up, it'll never turn off. Crossing on the way to school used to have one, 10~years ago - I'm surprised they're still around.

The local Esso car wash has, in braille, "Press button for assistance" on the machine where you enter the wash code...

I guess the guide dogs are also taught to fill in the driving licence application forms that are also available from DVLA in Braile (I'm not joking about the application forms, they are available)
