When will be get the 1st 300mph production car?
Discussion
After reading about the possibility of a 264mph new veyron.
And Hennessey's Venom Gt that he's said will do 270mph.
How long will it be until we see the 1st 300mph production car?
Giving that it takes a lot more power aero and engineering to get a few more mph.
And what with the whole eco thing slowly creeping up on car makers.

Its not just about adding more power, the big issue is how to cool the engine down! I think the veyron has about 12 rads!!!
I'm sure it wont be long before one comes along though!
300mph is a scary thought
I do wonder if we're getting well into the zone of not 'how?' but 'why?'. What could anybody possibly use a 300 mph top speed for? At least when all these (now seemingly pedestrian) supercars could just top 200 mph, you could imagine, if the conditions were perfect, you might just be able to max the thing out. 300 mph? Unless your surname is Volkswagen, I can't see where you could use it.I'm sure it wont be long before one comes along though!

I saw this and thought that I'd posted this almost exactly 2 years ago

Not a criticism of the OP, but it goes to prove that my own memory works at least...

haha brilliant, i'll have a read though that n have a see what people though on the matter 2 years ago.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

). Is any of the technology in the Veyron ground-breaking at all or is it just a fairly extreme extrapolation of normal car tech? I'm wondering whether there's any "trickle down" of new tech into normal cars to give a thin justification for it.Of course, the "because we can" answer is perfectly valid but unless there is some technological advance it seems to me to be increasingly irrelevant.
With the right design, 300mph ins't actually that hard to achieve. It's all about compromise though, super cars are built to handle and stop quickly too. At 300mph Parachutes would be a real consideration and as mentioned, tyres would be straight-line specials, not your typical do-it-all everyday car tyres. Bugatti stipulate a new set of tyres should be fitted before a full speed run on the Veyron.
With regards to power, the JCB dieselmax did 350mph with two diesel digger engines, and using only 1,300 of the available 1,500hp.
The Maclaren F1 did 231mph with 627hp. Double the power and I think it's slippery enough to do another 70mph.

Why 300mph? Well, why not?
There is no point in a 250mph Veyron. There is no point in pretty much any production car being able to do more than 130mph, and even that is pushing it. Why make production cars faster than 70mph? That is, of course, the speed limit.
The day will come, but I think it's still pretty far off.

I don't think we will get a 300 mph production car ever. There's no point.
The Veyron was a hugely expensive exercise that was never going to recoup it's costs and was a real engineering challenge. 300 mph would just be too expensive and given there isn't a road in the world where you could do that kind of speed why would anyone even try?

I wondered if that would come up - there are places you can use all the performance of your 200mph car effectively and legally (and on the road too). They are few and far between, but do exist. I'd guess the number of places you could use all the performance of your 300mph car effectively and legally are a tiny subset of those. There is no point in a 250mph Veyron. At what point does it become a game of top trumps rather than an attempt to make a better car?

I think we've reached that stage already with the Veyron, its widely understood that its just a tech demo showing what VAG group are capable of.It's probably just my preferences but I prefer cars that achieve performance through clever, light and efficient design rather than big power and weight. Top speed (once you're above 150mph or so) is pretty irrelevant to me so I tend to lose interest in the mega-power mega-speed hypercars pretty quickly.
For example, I don't see the Veyron being a big step on from the F1 and much prefer the design ethos of the F1.
