Just been told the flexy in my passats exhaust is leaking. Replacement £700 plus vat ! Phoned local motorsport place and asked how much for a replacement section fabricated ... £100 likely, absolute max £200.

Why can't regular garages offer fixes like this?

Have you tried looking for a non-oem part?

Depending on how old the car is, and thus whether exhaust parts are actually available, you might find it a bit cheaper.

Or somewhere like: http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/

ETA: the above link doesn't seem to have anything for your car.

That £700 plus VAT probably includes a catalytic convertor BTW.

Garages tend to take the piss by marking up prices.

Garage that I (used) to trust fitted a new alternator for me - I checked out the prices beforehand of parts as I was going to do it myself but didnt have time.

They reckoned the replacement part would be £325 yikes

Contacted the autofactors - yep exact same make model and amperage - £90

Contacted garage - suddenly came down to £120.

Was a warranty paid job in the end anyway so paid it up - not going to use them again for any of my vehicles though.

I fully understand and appriciate a parts markup as part of profit on the job - but to triple the price is just obscene when the part could be purchsed by joe bloggs from anywhere.

Yes, I guess what irritates me is that nothing can ever be fixed any more it's as if fabrication skills have been wiped away. Garages now in my experience can 'fix' anything it's alway you need a new part. They seem incapable of doing anying but tightening or loosening bolts.

I had this with my Peugeuot 205, rear shock absorber bolt £3.89 for 2, the nuts were £3.89 for six(Why would I need six!!!)

Nuts arrive in stock but bolts out of stock, They cannot tell me when they will arrive so I give my details to contact me when in. No phone call arrives, So I ring other dealers they tell me they are awaiting stocks and will be approx six weeks, So I go to local Nut & Bolt distributor and guess what they have the nut and bolt in stock and charge a quid!! unreal! am still waiting call from dealer. Also one branch charges a pound carriage to get from other branch 5 miles away!!

That seems to be the going rate for an AC compressor, unless people on here know different.

I seem to recall AC being a £750 option fitted at the factory and a new compressor is £1500, without all the pipe work and associated gubbins

Be careful, not all nuts and bolts are the same. Frequently suspension bolts are high tensile bolts and a standard bolt wont have the required strength.

I'm hoping as you phoned a specialist bolt place you mentioned it was for suspension and they supplied high tensile strength parts anyway!
