k?Having read the entire article I think the following is worth taking into consideration:
It was an accident, the chap got his arm caught and quickly became trapped; he tried several attempts to get free without success owing to the situation and he went through the awful realisation that to save himself he would have to attempt an amputation on himself with no form of anesthesia.
as the article states:
"Doctors said the partial self-amputation prevented the spread of the infection to the rest of his body and saved his life"
Looks like the chap in question managed to save his life through awful self sacrifice and suffering.
