I need to change the standard stereo in my GF's 'S' plate MK 2 Mx-5. It has a single DIN unit which doesn't work properly so I have bought a Sony Unit to fit from a friend.

I don't have a clue about car stereo's at all. How do I get it out? It doesn't seem to have any holes for me to stick pins in to remove it as far as I can tell. When I get it out do I need some sort of adaptor to make it work?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think the sony head units have a little vertical slits on either side which you're supposed to stick the removal tools into... (think something along the lines of a metal lolly stick).

I seem to remember that I just used a hacksaw blade (a blunt one!) to get my old Sony head unit out.

Alternatively you could get the proper tools - should only be a few quid.

The old unit is unbranded. The sony one is the replacement for it. I cant see any holes to put the removal tool in at all?

I hope I'm not pointing out the bleeding obvious, but there's not a plastic facia/bevel around the edge of the old one is there? This might be covering the removal holes...

Worth getting a ISO adapter too if it hasn't got one. Saves a lot of faffing about with terminal blocks or bullet connectors. One end is standard (ISO) plug to fit most aftermarket head units, the other end is specific to the car.

There's a guide here to removing the double din version, but I think the single-din would be similar.

Definately worth getting an ISO adapter, I got mine from MX5 Parts and it's worked fine.
