Vauxhall Omega Estate issue.....
Discussion
A quick question for the brains of PH
My FiL has a Vauxhall Omega estate
It's an Auto
I know I know not very PH but it works for him
Anyway its developed an issue with the gearbox, but it seems to be electrical rather than mechanical
I'm not entirely au fais with the exact issue but essentially he is now having to use it like a manually, changing from 1,2,3 etc then every so often it switches into limp home mode
He has spoken to a garage who have advised it is probably the ECU and then offer to swap this out for a new one at a cost of £500-£600 for the ECU and about £200 of Labour
Does this sound even remotely close or are they taking the proverbial, he is understandably reluctant to do this on an ageing car especially as finances are tight anyway so is kinda stuck
Sorry for the vagueness I can get more info if required I was wondering if any Vauxhall experts (beards) could shed any light on ECU costs and perhaps if they have heard of a similar problem?

if he needs parts call Omega spare parts guy steve, you'll find his adverts on ebay and he is very helpful.
or go here;

Where is he?
Hundreds of Auto Omega's have been broken for spares by the guys on www.vvoc.com, one of them will almost certainly have the parts you need.

In Kidbrooke SE LondonHundreds of Auto Omega's have been broken for spares by the guys on www.vvoc.com, one of them will almost certainly have the parts you need.
Thanks to you too, if this is a route we need to go down I will pop on there
Fingers firmly crossed but looking at the previous link it looks like this could be resolved by an ECU remap in the region of £35
That would be amazing
God love PH
I have had a few problems with exactly the same car, been on there loads very helpful people.
The gearbox is a sealed unit so you can't really change the fliud, but if you search on the owners site there is a guide as to how to top it up, apparently just doing this can solve alot of issues and make it run smoother.

Cheers, I have registered there so will see what they say, my initial thought that £700 was very very steep seems to have been right then I guess The gearbox is a sealed unit so you can't really change the fliud, but if you search on the owners site there is a guide as to how to top it up, apparently just doing this can solve alot of issues and make it run smoother.

That's a great forum with some very knowledgeable people on it.
I'd wager that the problem is with the selector switch on the side of the gearbox. It gets mucky internally. Usually a clean out fixes it but a new switch isn't expensive!!.
That's what happened to mine anyway.

When he puts it into drive, the indicator lights all come on and it goes into Limp home mode
If he uses it as a manual it is ok
One guy on the Omega forum has come to the same conclusion
Cheers
