Griff Chim Chassis

Just testing the water here, I am restoring my griff which is in desperate need of a replacement chassis. After speaking to some chaps at the old TVR sight I was introduced to Dan from Edmondson Engineering, who had worked at the factory for 14 years as a chassis engineer on production and Tuscan challenge cars.

Basically he has offered to produce a brand new chassis, blasted and powder coated (properly) for £3648 but to do this he needs at least 5 confirmed orders.

Anyone interested??

I'm probably having a new chassis as I want to put mine together with a different gearbox and diff, too much change potentially for one designed for the LT77 and GKN diff.

Currently I've been speaking to Sportmotive who can produce the three variations of Griff/Chim chassis.

Hi Barry

we already make chassis' for the Griffith and Chimaera and had our own jig manufactured 2 years ago, our current price is £3475 plus vat, however we have recently fully recovered the cost of our jig and are now looking at reducing our prices and are aiming to get them under the £3k mark....yet to be announced as we are currently producing a chassis using CDS for all the round tube and this may become our standard production chassis, we haven't finalised the cost until we have actually finished it. We do a free initial inspection for new customers so we can advise on the state of your chassis and wether or not its more cost effective to replace it, we will also be offering a repair service, ie we will repair your own original chassis in our jig.

Danny was THE Tuscan Challenge chassis/fabrication man when the factory was open and he's still based at Bristol Ave.
His work has been tested to near destuction throughout the years of the Challenge.
He's still making new Challenge chassis, GTF chassis and repairing existing TVR race chassis.
He does all the fabrication work on my race cars and i can vouch for the strength of his chassis when subjected to impact..

He has a kettle, but unless you've been immunised against amoebic dysentery - take your own cups .

Possibly a really stupid question but I'll ask it anyway. Would it be possible to build a chassis using stainless steel tube /sections? I had assumed that even if the properties of the metal did allow it, the cost would be off the clock. Or, could the outriggers just be in stainless although I am not even sure if you can even weld mild to stainless, doh!

SS or at least the grade you don't have to paint could / would crack over time with any flex... We replaced the outriggers on my mates 'S' with SS tube coz he wanted it and not coz I thought it was a good idea and that is still fine 3 years on.. he POR 15'd it... and yes, you can weld MS and SS no problem... but I would go for the MS tube.. DOM is what I've used in the past... also SS is much heavier!...

Also, I've seen Ian's chassis and the rig when they first built it... looked a nice job indeed!!

There must be a way round a stainless chassis????????


I was lazy, i just bought a griff thats had the chassis done.

I'm not getting into the stainless debate again sorry, its already been done! we are sticking with mild steel but are probably going to go with standardising on CDS tube for all the round tubes.
