Ambitious and exciting plans to stage a major Karting event on the roads of Cheltenham have been announced.

The project, promoted by Cheltenham Motorsports, is being sponsored by a group of Cheltenham based businesses and aims to stage the event in 2013.

sadly it will never work - its just a pipe dream. when the 'race' was first announced the local press had all the usual crap including a report that jensen button had given the event his backing.

has he? of course he hasnt.

the local press also stated that no city in the uk had staged a street race before so the event would be a first for cheltenham.

wrong on two points - 1) cheltenham is a town & not a city & 2) what about the birmingham super prix that ran for a few years?

prior to the birmingham super prix the city ran an event called 'on the streets' whereby a number of race stars of the time were persuaded to demonstrate all sorts of cars around the streets of birmingham.

we had james hunt, stirling moss, fangio to name a few.

as someone who was involved in the early days of the 'on the streets' event i know how hard it was to organise the events.

road closures, somewhere for the car to be fettled, stored, lined up, parked safely overnight.

we had to use the old birmingham fruit & veg market for overnight storage & preparation of the cars which was a nightmare.

we had to try & stop the drivers from giving their cars a hammering around the streets. of course they promised to behave themselves....

did they? what do you think.

great fun.

sadly i dont think that the cheltenham race, whilst a good idea will ever happen. i hope it does however the costs of staging the event will be astronomical.

good luck however to all involved.

Although if its karts I expect a lot of the storage and prep issues will go away.

As a Cheltenham local i'd love to see it, a mini monaco on our streets, not sure if it will ever happen, but it would be fantastic.
