Exhaust wrap - does it actually do anything?

Noticing the other topic on here about under bonnet tempatures, brings me to the point of the webbing that people place around the exhaust manifolds. Does it actually do anything to reduce the under bonnet tempature?
Or basicly what i'm saying is : mine currently doesn't have any on there, when the engine comes out again next week (with a bit of luck), is it worth me getting some to put on there and where can i get it from?

John, from what I've read they can be considered as much of a curse as blessing. Principally the material retains moisture against the manifold and promotes issues, and also, unless you get the wrap "perfect" it can cause hot spots which crack the manifold.
Surface treatment with a coating seems to be a better, albeit likely more expensive option.

Thats sort of along my chain of thought too. At the minute i can't really justify the cost of having them coated - which seems like the best option - as i'm still trying to sort the engine issues out with regard to the oil mixing with the water. May just best to leave it without them then !

Yes, it does with mine. I used Thermotec stuff and it was good quality. After a year later its still on, no peeling, and in the same condition as when I put it on.M3John said:

Just Google it. I did get my first lot from GPR. But had some customer service issues after a few orders, so went elsewhere. I'll dig out the receipt later.

Yes, thanks, all hunky dory - very excited about Spa (sad old git that I am!).I think the wrap works, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure why everyones got so keen on this. The Cerb bay gets hot sure, and we know that heat breaks down a lot of components over time, but I'd rather wait to be able to do the coating than risk cracked manifolds.
Like you, I just need to put some pennies aside.
By the way, I'm sorry to read about your troubles with the beast. You seem to have really got stuck in though, good for you! I'd be terrified. Best of luck with getting it all straightened out...
I also used the Thermotec stuff (3mm), it works very well on my car, IIRC £60 worth did both sides, although the headers must come off the car to do a proper job, IMO.
Oh, and it wasn't a cost issue, I thought it false economics to Ceramic coat 12 year old stainless headers that have had previous cracks welded up.
It would appear cracked manifolds is a common problem with the cerb, even without the wrap.......so you got nothing to loose.
