Hi all, sorry to ask this but the search engine is down frown

Tuscan is using about 1L oil per 1000 miles which I think is deemed "acceptable" if not brilliant. Its a 2000 4.0 with about 17k on the clock.

I've noticed sooty exhaust exits (around the chromed section) so assume that it could be worn valve guides - is this a known issue? Any other ideas?

I'm also using 10W40, would 15W50 make things any better?

Oil pressure is great (never less than 30psi even when hot idling) so don't think it's anything too serious, just want to get a feel for it.

Also wondered whether type of usage would make a difference i.e. shorter trips vs. longer, blat vs. cruise.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

J

1 liter on 1000 miles is fine
there are cars in need of a lot more.
and it depends on the way you use it
try to get prolong somewhere. it protect's youre engine when running lean on oil

Mine has averaged c.1k miles per litre for the 7 years and forty-odd k miles I've owned it. It uses a bit more if I go for a play.

Same here, 1 litre/1000 miles. Currently using 0w40. Read a lot about other types and note from car history file that it has run 10w40/15w40. Any (real) benefit (to usage/running) in changing to either of these?

Jason at St8six advised me to expect the same (1L per 1k) usage and to only use 0w40, and that was for a 4L Tuscan also.

mine started off like that, keep an eye on it start logging the exact milage you do and the amout you are putting in. After around 9 months mine started to get worse and its likley the stem seals have worn. Its now puffing blue smoke on start up and having to get a new top end done come winter.

OK, update time. I noticed some oil on the driveway that wasn't there before, looked underneath and the ally plate and ARB has oil dripping off them. Seems the jackshaft oil seal is weeping, which probably explains some (maybe most) of the oil loss.

Getting it replaced next week, so seems the excuse is waning..........

Flintstone took me for a run in his 4.3 Tuscan a couple of weeks ago - poulled in 5th gear from 20mph. The low down torque was amazing and I can't imagine what Powers 4.5 will be like when it officially comes on the market. Just a shame I have neither the money or the immediate need for a rebuild.
