So, my car has been away for 2 weeks getting a little bit of work done and is currently near taunton (well, about 10-15miles from there). the company who it's with said if i can get there before 9am saturday they can pick me up from the station, but as they are short on numbers saturday, they can't pick me up during the day. fair enough.

so, i look at train times from southampton central, southampton airport parkway, eastleigh and winchester to see what trains i could get to arrive to taunton before 9am.

and....the time i would have to leave is..... 11.30PM FRIDAY night. WTF!!!!!!! it's basically impossible for me to get there before 9am. so, i'm now having to get a slightly later train, take the bike with me, and have to cycle from taunton station to their grounds, about 15miles down the road.

how utter ridiculous is that. i rely on public transport just once, and it fails miserably. bra-f*cking-vo.

and they wonder why people don't use public transport.

rant over.

Don't live in the sticks then. The two locations are hardly close to each other anyway.

Excellent. A perfectly reasonable experiment and you've proved your point superbly. 'Public transport' as a whole is 'crap'. Well done, you've saved us all a lot of wasted time, money and effort.

in the sticks? Southampton is hardly that, it's quite a big town, population of 250,000. hardly in the sticks! the trip takes me approx 1.5 hours in the car, i don't think 9.5 hours by train is acceptable. neither location isn't what i'd call "in the sticks" for that i would say some areas in wales, scotland etc

I agree. Let the tree huggers and yoghurt knitters use it.

It's simply because there isn't a direct train line from Southampton to Taunton. Train lines in the South tend to run like spokes out of London, so if you want to travel laterally you'll have to go along one and back out on another.

Google suggests that Soton to Taunton is two and a quarter hours by road and the train journey, bearing in mind that you'll have to change whichever route you take, is just under three hours.

Given that only six people use trains at the weekend, it's hardly unreasonable that they don't start at the crack of dawn - they are a business, not a state-owned charity.

aha good plan!! only issue might be getting to the train station in the morning without the bike.... not sure if i fancy a 5 mile walk hehe and don't want to leave a £1k bike locked up there all day. i know someone who did that, had 3 locks on their bike, came back to find their rear mech and cassette missing eek

It's a wonder how some people on here made it to adulthood.

There are lessons to be learnt here

1. Thank you for stating the blindingly obvious, your keen observational skills are lost here and I urge you to don cape and tights and go protect us for costumed crime lords.

2. Could you have not got the work done closer to home?

3. Taxi to Soton station and then taxi at the other end

4. Learn how to fly using only your arms and the power of thought

5. Make threads like this and you might as well just have it tattooed on your forehead "Duuuuuuuhhh rip me a new one"
