I've noticed a growing trend for celebs wearing glasses when it's obvious they are just clear glass. It's something to do with the chic geek look so I've heard.

As a glasses wearer (+4.5 eek) since 8yo I find it very odd that people choose to wear them when not needed. I wear contacts when out on the town as i've always disliked wearing specs, even though I'm a full time wearer.
Bizzarly, laser surgery and contact lens use has gone up so it proves that "proper" wearers obviously would rather they didn't wear them so why choose to pretend to be part blind? confused

It's not only celebs. I've seen lots of people wear them, even at work. It might be that the prescription is very weak but then why do you need them on all the time or in the pub? It's easy to see if glasses are real; look at the wearer from the front and look to the side of their head through the lens and if distorts in any way - smaller for short sighted and bgger for long sighted - they are four eyed geeks, if not. Burn them!

I know this is petty but I don't like it!

I might wear a hearing aid next week. scratchchin

It's a bit of a fashion thing at the moment to wear the "geek" glasses, as pictured below by Chris Brown.

I think they look ridiculous...

i used to wear glasses and found it very restrictive so I had laser surgery...there is no way I'd wear glasses again on a vanity basis.

Pretty ttty to do this if you ask me.

Don't underestimate celebrities being paid to wear particular glasses as part of a marketing regime for an optician/frame house/brand for example.

Also available are high index lenses that are actually quite thin, but cost a whole deal more than the standard high street free lens deals. Which might be why you see people wearing apparently plano lenses which are in fact a genuine prescription.

WE sell a huge amount of fake glasses usually '80s style geek chic as it is known. Hopefully it will go away soon.

I have worn glasses for about 5 years now. Never really bothered me or felt restricted. I tried contacts but couldn't get on with them.

Wearing them to look cool is aking to putting your leg in plaster when it really isn't broken.

Quite sad.

It doesn't matter how thin they are, they're still the same strength. Mine are ultra, ultra thin but are still strong and if anyone else tries to look through them they'd get dizzy.
If they are "clear" they're fake.

I may consider wearing glasses like that but mostly so I can have what are effectively photochromatic sunglasses. I am very sensitive to light and wear them all year round so it would be a help to have something that goes clear when I go inside when I have my hands full. I would apparently still have to wear normal sunglasses in the car.

At the moment the sun is so bloody bright that I'm wearing some fairly dark ones and still squinting outside...

I have no idea why people would do this. I was prescribed glasses just to sharpen my vision, they were great, eyesight was perfect (it's not that bad with them off, just slightly blurred around the edges of things), but they gave me chronic headaches every day due to the pressure on the bridge of my nose. I had them adjusted time after time after time and they still did. So I don't wear them anymore.

I really don't understand people who would want to wear them when they didn't absolutely need to.

With the suspension of some disbelief I can just about imagine some tragic "celebrities" doing this.

As for non-entities - bks. No way. No-one is that much of a .

That's because your optician isn't that good. Any optician should be able to prescribe and recommend suitable glasses that stop that. Its all to due with where the glasses sit and where the weight is centered.

Try another optician and give it a go, your eyes will thank you. smile

Naaaa fk it, I'm fine without them, it just sharpened things up a little.

Im looking out the window now and I can see the individual leaves on a tree about 150m away, they're just slightly blurred. That will do me.

To OP Do you also object to coloured hair, make-up, boob jobs, fake tan etc. These are all enhancements that the wearer finds enjoyable although I doubt it was done for your benefit.

To Spurrs-442 You don't have to have ultra thin, you choose those for the cosmetic look. Tesco are doing glasses complete from £10, you may look a complete knob in them but they are cheap.

Whoa whoa! Stop with that rational, level-headed business!
This is PH, and we want an opportunity to take a pop at any minority opinion/trend which doesn't match our own preconceptions of 'normal'!

I've said it before - the irony of a forum full of people who staunchly defend the rights of a minority group (car enthusiasts) against what they feel is populist oppression (Government, and general public), then choosing to highlight/berate/belittle other minority views which differ from their own, is frankly laughable.

We (as car enthusiasts) crave other people's understanding of/sympathy to our predicament, yet still seek to marginalise other minority groups/trends whose agenda we disagree with.

Hypocritical at best, bigoted at worst.
