What's it going to be worth?
Discussion
Hello all,
My Tuscan S suffered what I thought was a blown head gasket on the second day of my driving holiday in France back in May. I have been without the car for almost a month to the day, due to timescales involved in vehicle repatriation etc.
Today I got the news I was dreading from Dom - full rebuild is required, due to a cracked head
This is not going to be cheap and has come at a particularly bad time, because I will (fingers crossed) be moving to Melbourne in September on a four year visa.
In the last 2 years it will have had the following major work done:
Alloy rad with cooling mod
Nitron suspension
Clutch + flywheel
Full engine rebuild
There will have been approximately £30k sunk in this car since it was delivered to its first keeper in 2002.
I will most likely sell it next spring, so that I can get a few months of use out of it before I leave for Oz and to make the most of seasonal value fluctuations. My Dad has kindly offered to look after it whilst I'm away.
So the question is how much value do you think a full TVR Power rebuild (3 year warranty) will add to the car? Can I expect to recoup some, albeit a token amount, of the rebuild costs?
Thanks in advance.
Gutted.

I was counting this rebuild in the last two years along with the other work.
It had a full rebuild in Dec 2006, so out of warranty.
If it's not going to add any value to the car I may well just keep it should I decide to move back to the UK after my visa expires. Taking the view that it shouldn't depreciate much, with only minimal miles being covered to keep it ticking over, the cost of the rebuild isn't so bad spread over four years or so.

Why not buy this and get some dosh back on selling the good bits from yours

You wont add value to the car with a rebuild unless you go for one like a 4.5 BUT they are expensive. So I think its a catch 22 situation...
I would consider the 3.5K engine. Sell your engine for a grand as a project.
I wouldnt wait until spring - the price difference isnt much and in the meantime you have an unused car (which is asking for trouble) you have insurance costs , servicing etc...
If you look at what your car is likely to honestly sell for and reduce the price by £3K then maybe someone will buy it as is. That way you are quids in.

that is one hell of a bargain, no wonder it's gone, if I had seen that ad I would have bought it straight away, I was offered 3k for my 4 litre non S spec engine out of my non rebuilt 44k Cerbera S6(though it was running and still in Car)http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1791617.htm
Damn that engine could have worked out well for me... bugger!
I bought my Tuscan last December knowing it had a full rebuild in the past for relative peace of mind. I was happy to pay a good price, because of its history. If I was looking to buy again I would be prepared to pay a premium for 3 years warranty. To pay an extra grand or two has got to be a worth while insurance policy against the type of costs i'm about to stump up.
If I kept the car whilst I'm in Oz it would be cared for by my Dad (mint Griff 500 owner) in his heated double garage and driven weekly to keep it tip top.
The engine will be rebuilt, that way I can enjoy the car before I go and the Tuscan experience end on a high. Whether I sell before I leave is a decision for another day.

What about taking it to Oz with you. You can either keep it and enjoy it in the sunshine or sell it for a HUGE profit.

I did briefly look into taking it with me. Unfortunately I believe I need proof of ownership AND use for a minimum of 12 months to import the car as a personal import (cheapest method). If plans work out I'll be moving in September, so only 9 months proof.
TVRs fetch silly money (well sellers ask silly money at least) in Oz. Practically worth three times as much as in the UK based on the current exchange rate. If I could take it as a personal import it would still cost too much baring in mind the money I could have used will now be spent on the rebuild instead
Not a bad idea though

my mate put a sag enine in its tuscan mk1 after it blew up in my hands! the sag eninge and the other late sp6s are apparently better built and more reliable than the first ones due to allowing better lubrication to the cams when they spin round i dont remember exaclty how but i remember the newer engine having some holes on the cylinder block that the old engine didnt, anyway the newer engine was a straight sawp with the old one, so if you find any sp6 from a later car, stick it in
Reason for the full rebuild is that coolant was found in the bottom end. So the engine would have been hydraulic locking and forcing coolant through the bores (I'm not an engine expert, so bare with me) resulting in a suspect bottom end. I don't know the extent of the damage to the bottom end, but I wouldn't feel comfortable just having the top end done whether I decide to keep the car or sell it...
Bit of an update...
I'll be picking the Tuscan up from Power tomorrow evening. I haven't seen the car since it was loaded onto a back of a low loader in France mid May. Looking forward to getting back into the driving seat although the first 1000 miles will be rather sedate to run the new engine in.
It's had a full S rebuild along with a reconditioned head, new starter, battery and some other odds and sods. Not sure what the bill is going to be just yet, but I have a ball park figure which is wince worthy! Not that it matters now, because I'm getting my baby back
