Another great lot of immigrants. Frankly this country would be better off scrapping rules based immigration and employing a bunch of right wing bigots to stand at the border and give the yay or nay, the way other countries do.

It's all just part of the dream "come to the UK, make a fortune and live happily ever after" the problem seems to be that as with our own chav's they seem to have missed out the WORK HARD part

The best bit is that after being in jail and costing a fortune, they'll walk free and straight into benefits and then probably more life of crime judging on their past record. Any thoughts of perhaps sending them back would be against their human rights etc.

How the hell did someone who was originally an asylum seeker get into the Navy? Granted Citizenship or not surely there is some boundaries

Maybe they needed to fill the brown quota, or is that just the police?

Strangely enough she must have fulfilled the recruitment criteria at the time. I was only a piece of paper away from joining myself, so there's clearly something wrong!

What are people annoyed at?

A British Citizen smuggling drugs?

A recent asylum seeker joining the navy?

I'm guessing not the first one? I can see why it's a bad idea to have a recent British Citizen being eligible to join the Navy. This should be the real story as the first one has been happening for a looooooong time.

I can't see what you can see, please explain.

Misleading thread title, british citizen smuggles drugs.

Yes she was originally from a foreign country but she was a citizen when she joined, what would we do without them, a few personnel from jamaica have died and what would we do without the gurkhas?

There is more than one simple story here, just wondering what people are annoyed at:

1. British Citizen who is part of the Royal Navy smuggles drugs
2. Recent asylum seeker joins the Royal Navy
3. Asylum seeker who recently joined Royal Navy smuggles drugs

And also am curious if it was a 'native' that had done the same crime whether it would have got the same attention?

For the record, I don't think it's a good idea to have asylum seekers being eligible to join the Royal Navy but am not surprised someone in the Navy smuggled drugs.

That was the bit I was hoping you would expand on...of course, she would have moved on from asylum seeker status before being eligible, but apart from this specific instance, do you know of any other situations which would support your view or is it just a gut feeling. If the latter, based on what exactly?

I expect sailors to try and smuggle drugs, the reward can appear to be worth the risk.

I am shocked that a recent asylum seeker can join the Navy though, the risks do not appear to be worth the reward.

The Navy part isn't of much concern to me, it's the fact that these people are citizens, is it given out on packets of Corn Flakes or something?

"The three men were caught on CCTV purchasing digital scales, plastic boxes and clingfilm to be used to distribute the drugs."

It's simple common sense. What if the Navy had to enter a conflict with an asylum seeker's home nation? There could potentially be a conflict of loyalty, especially if they still had loved ones still living in that country.

That could happen with any foreign national joining any of our Armed Forces...like This chap perhaps? Except I think there's a few people who would say it's worth the risk.

Yes, you are right, it could happen to any of them and it's easy to pick good and bad examples of this practice. It still doesn't change my opinion though. I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, it's simply my opinion that I am sharing.

OK. Mine is different. All part of LRT.
