Dealer's Name on your car...

Hi guys,

When I bought my Chimaera, the original dealers name is written on the back, some kind of stick on letters, I guess this is reasonably common when the cars are brand new.

One letter the 't' in Melton Mowbray, has fallen off with the last wash, any one know of a way to either remove the rest without harming the paintwork, or what to use to safely re-attach it?

Either:

a)Soak a cloth in some petrol/meths and ease the stickers off whilst vigorously rubbing (ooerr)

or

b)Warm them up with a hairdryer and gently peal them off.


Or go and live in Melon Mowbray

Take it back to the dealer and get them to take it all off? Certainly when I bought my Griff i made it quite clear that I would not be impressed if they stuck their name on the boot-lid paintwork! Rich...

My Chim had a Chris Neils badge on the back and liberal application of very hot, but not boiling, water helped soften the adhesive enough to peel it off.

They're usually stuck on with double-sided foam "stickies". The easiest way to remove them is to cut through the foam with dental floss, then remove the residue with a petrol soaked rag.

That being said, I always ask for money off in return for advertising space on my car....

Be careful the area is clean and free from dirt as it can scratch your paintwork. We always use hot water and slowly peel those ones off and add a little polish on it afterwards to fully clean it back.

If you are sticking another one on top then cut any crap back off the paint so your new sticker will bond properly and before peeling the top section (paper that it is set on) back rub it hard to make sure it holds.

Some can be tricky and take your time basically taking anything on and off your paintwork.

Just think yourself lucky as the rear window stickers on the soft top TVR in the main ruins the rear screens.

depends which dealer you bought the car from - I ripped mine straight off

I would take it back to the garage to get done if you are not too far away. Its not worth the risk (however small) nor the hassle. It really me off when they do things like that, like when you buy a CD and the stickies on front dont come off without leaving nasty scuffs, or when you buy.....

I peeled the PH sticker off my old rear screen and replaced it on my shiny new one without any problems.

Mind you, it's not really a sticker as such, I guess.

James' nice stylish sticker is displayed on Wol, the original suppliers sticker has, as James has said, completely buggered the rear screen. (a bit).

blimey - sounds a bugger - aside from the clear pastic stickers where the kick plates should be, I didnt have any other trade stickers on my car other than James' sticker on the back. And despite taking off all dealer stickers on previous cars, I have left his on there. Cos I'm nice like that. And he supplies cold beer

Does he supply cold beer? Haven't had any of that, yet! Is there no end to the mans talents?

I imagine I'm not going to like the answer to this question, but I have to ask as I really would like to remove the dealer sticker from the rear window...

Any tips for how this should be tackled please????

Cars from Peninsula TVR are the best, as their stickers come off really easy. In fact you can remove the n, u, l, a, with your finger nails.

Ahhh, that's not very nice, after all the nice things that've been said about them an'all.

to remove solid badges from bodywork use some dental floss and work it off gently in a cheese cutting motion, as for window stickers i safely removed one from a 107 merc sl by peeling off the worst and using autosmart tar and glue remover on some rag but be gentle and dont rub hard or soak a big area,

To remove any residual glue left after peeling the stickers, get a tin on lighter fluid. mMake sure that you polish the area well afterwards as the lighter fluid is a degreaser and will remove all traces of polish.


As for removing the stickers initially, use a hairdryer to warm the area first, if it's very cold out and you don't do this the vinyl will just snap leaving you lots of little bits to pick off. Be very careful as you can lift the lacquer coat leaving a nastly gap between lacquer and base coat.

PMSL at the comment about taking the car back to the dealer to get it removed, only one thing to say about that is... get a life! Do you go to the dentist every time you need to clean your teeth?
