Ridiculous idea or bargain motoring?

I do a 50 mile round trip over B roads so can't afford a money pit and this could very well be one!

540i "Protection"

Does that mean anything, armoured ?!

This one is a lot older but seems to have history and low owners http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/ni/cars_popup.jsp...

I have a 535i v8 and I do a daily round trip of 30 miles on decent B roads.

Ave fuel consumption is around 21 mpg.

That's for an auto, driven reasonably gently, although I find if I hoof it there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of difference....

Yep although could just mean strengthened glass- well worth checking out for interests sake. If it is fully armoured though it will weigh TONNES AND TONNES and drink fuel and eat tyres like no-ones business, plus feel heavy and lead footed.

In terms of answering the first question dont be too worried about these V8'. they are strong, run on cam chains and can be OK on juice depending on the style of roads you drive on and whether you drive like a or not. I do 40,000 miles a year in my 840Ci and its just returned 32 mpg the other day over my 380 mile trip. Service um on time and it should be fine.

My e39 540 auto has averaged 23mpg seemingly regardless of how I drive it. Go for it!

Funny huh. TBH they first offered runflats on the p in 98. I saw one on display at bmw in cape town. They had cut a section out of a tyre and shot at a window and door with a rifle to demonstrate their ability to withstand.
Tyre was f off heavy.

Hmmm...very interesting!

I imagine that if I were to buy one it would only be for six months or so, I generally prefer smaller, dartier cars but I would love a cruiser V8.

Im an E39 nut and had loads. they are great cruisers, I did 23,500 miles in just 6 months in my last one but the V8's have Servotronic steering so arent as sharp or precise as the 6 cylinder models but the V8's great and suits the car well. If youre used to 'darty' cars you might find it a bit of a brage but really depends on what roads you drive on really.

Either way if you do buy it get rid of that chavvy barry boy "M" badge on the boot!!!!wrong wrong wrong!

Buy my 740 sport instead and have some real fun (34mpg on a run as well, 26-8 combined). I need to sell having renewed 1/2 the car in the last 6 months cos there's no isofix and Mrs. Bongo won't have it anymore.

Fackin gutted I tells ya.

That and England performance, I'm off to bed.

Eh?! Are you SURE about that? My 4.0 XJ8 never saw more than 25 on a run, and my CL500 is around the same. If you're getting 10mpg more out of a 740 well....I'm impressed.

Cant answrr for him but my 535i was 32mpg and can get the same out of my 840Ci - assume thats something to do with the 0.29CD factor?

Your Jag sounds a bit pants though although driving style has a HUGe efefct on mpg figs.

Well I get about 35mpg form my 650 on a run, so yes 34 sounds about right to me.

Love to know how you manage that, my E38 never got anywhere near those numbers. Wasn't shocking on the run, but nor did it get anywhere near 34mpg!

Is that on the downhill of a mountain pass?

I can't get that out of a 2.3T Volvo, and no where near that with my BMW V8!

I have got 34 a few times in my 540 but 30/31 is more usual for a long motorway run.
I do 150 miles per day which is 50:50 motorway and A roads and I get an average of 27.

I was very proud when I first achieved 34mpg so I took a photo to prove it. Mind you, it was a boring journey!
