Hi all,

I drive a MkII MX-5. Absolutely love it. It's completely standard apart from a Momo Race steering wheel that i fitted a few days after I bought the car (I still think it's the best thing I could have done to improve on the car). Over the months I've toyed with lots of upgrade ideas. Ended up thinking I'm gonna leave it standard but buy a 4-point harness. I find I'm making lots of effort just to stay in the seat when cornering hard.

Has anyone else gone the harness route? Any recommendations for makes etc? I've searched other threads and there seems to be an issue with whether they're road legal (apart from Exige/Elise harnesses). My rollover bar is just cosmetic. It would fold like a paperclip on impact so I need to find somewhere to fix the harness to. A mate suggested a strut running from the seatbelt fixing on one side to the other, which, as well as adding a bit of stifness to the chassis, would also act as something to fix it to.

Any thoughts/ideas/experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Tim

I wouldn't fit a harness without a roll-bar. With a harness you are kept sitting upright and in a rollover you would be brown bread. With a standard seat-belt your body moving around actually keeps you safer.

Try a CG-Lock instead wink

My Mk 1 has a proper strut brace behind the seats which i have fitted a harness to.

Whatever you do do though, *don't* remove the inertia belts. Harnesses are pain to put on and will drive you nuts if you try to use them on a daily basis. Plus you'll look a dork.

Buy the eyelet couplings for the harnesses, these replace the inertia reel fastenings but allow the harnesses to 'hook on'.

I appreciate Lazza's comments, but really and truly if you have a roll-over bar you should then wear a helmet. In a violent roll over your head will still hit the road, plus there is an even greater danger of your head hitting the roll bar, which is harder than the road.

What i do, is to drive in a manner which will be great fun but won't endanger my life or anyone else's. I too have used harnesses just to connect to 'connect' myself to the car better, but in a violent rollover only FIA-spec stuff will be of any use, imo. So don't roll over. smile

< this! Superb upgrade for the money, since I bought one a few years back I wouldn't be without it on any of my cars. Also look at a "foamectomy" on you stanard seat whicn can make a massive difference.
