hi all.

thinking of buying an early mk1, but it needs to be left parked in the street. so:

how much would a s/h hardtop cost?
how secure are they?
do they reduce the insurance premium?

cheers.

No more than £500.
Secure enough.
No. If anything they will increase the premium as they are stealable wink. Just don't tell the insurer you have one. It's not a modification, it's an accessory.

But then you can`t claim if it does get stolen. I told my insurance company i had one & it didn`t effect the premium.

You can also buy lockable side latches to make them more secure.

I recently sold my pretty much immaculate hardtop for £340 on eBay- some make a bit more, others a few quid less but anything above £350 or thereabouts seems to hang around the forums for awhile so I would say £400 is plenty. I guess it's kind of the wrong time of year to be selling a hardtop so it's a good time to be buying smile

They come up fairly reguarly on MX5Nutz.

Although not the most secure things in the world as standard I'd guess you'd at least need to break a window or lever it down with the front latches, side latches and rear frankenstein bolts all doing their job.

they can be stolen en situ from the car? the whole reason I want one is that I would be leaving the car parked on the street and want to minimise the chance of theft. i can't imagine soft top + on street parking returning a decent insurance premium!

incidentally, any insurance recommendations? are imported 5s harder to insure?

I'm 22 with 0 no claims, (rush hour in Madrid)and the insurance on a Eunos Roadster rather than a '5 was only circa £50 difference - on street parking in a not-great area. I was worried about the soft top thing initially but, (and maybe this is a bad idea) I leave the doors unlocked and the boot/glovebox unlocked/empty. I'd rather some scrote rifled through the interior to find nothing, than broke windows/slashed the roof etc.
p.s I've had the car 4 weeks now and LOVE it (and so do girls). So pleased I listened to PH (and EVO top 100 drivers cars!)

I used to leave my beat up skoda unlocked but noone ever did me the favour of stealing it! my neighbour has an mgb gt and someone further up an e46 m3, but I feel a softtop is tempting fate.

I've seen an 89 eunos with a top for a good price. guess I should investigate insurance prices.

Of course you can! If you have valuables in the boot you can claim for them - you don't have to tell the insurance company every time you carry anything of value in the car! Check your insurance policy wink

So when you try & claim the money for a stolen hardtop they didnt know you had let me know how you get on wobble

Not sure i`d want to take that chance personally.

hmmm. a eunos seems to be only £50 more than a uk car, which is fine by me.

however, even the uk car is coming out at £690/yr with £550excess which is ridiculous imo.

kept on the street, 20k miles p/a inc business miles, 3yrs ncb. [spent past yr on a classic policy] clean licence and no accidents.

only hope maybe a classic policy but doubt that will cover business miles. guess i'll start looking at derv econobarges instead

Who are you getting quotes from?

Try the specialists. Richard Egger, Adrian Flux, A-Plan (Bletchley office) Sky & no doubt a few others i`ve forgotten about.

will do. I'll also try a quote with both parents as named drivers, should knock a couple of hundred off easily.

If you call Adrian Flux make sure you say you are a Pistonheads member, that can save you some money.
