A friend of mine (honestly!) is about to replace his tired old Freelander with a 56 plate Rav 4 T180.
After a bit of research it appears that this car was fitted with quite expensive Bridgstone run flat tyres. In one article I found it hints that these are only available from selected Toyota dealers on an exchange wheel for around £170 each.....
Can anybody here shed any light on this? Could he fit non run flats on the original rims?
Do any of you guys have any experience of this particular model? He`s been blinded by the spec of this car and this is the only thing putting him off at the moment.
Many thanks in advance.

I can't be certain but i'm sure he'd be able to fit non run-flat tyres on the rims instead. A mate of mine did that with his OH's Mini and didn't have any problems. The tyre place actually recommended doing it, even though they would have made more money from selling him the run-flats.
Plus points were that the tyres were cheaper and gave better ride quality. The Mini didn't come with a spare so he went out and bought a can of Tyre-Weld.
Does the Rav4 come with a spare?

The Bridgestone's are NOT runflats.
There is a metal rim that goes inside to make the tyres runflats.
Not all Toyota dealers have the facilities to change these tyres.
If you damage the rim when removing old tyres, they are £90 to replace.
Expect to pay circa £250 for each tyre.
There is NO spare.

Excuse my stupidity here but is it the wheel that`s special then? There is a metal rim that goes inside to make the tyres runflats.

There is a metal rim that goes inside the tyre and around the inside of the wheel that makes the whole thing a run flat set up.

Cheers for that. There is a metal rim that goes inside the tyre and around the inside of the wheel that makes the whole thing a run flat set up.
I still haven`t quite got it...
You normally have a wheel and a tyre. With a T180 there is a metal band that goes inside to support the sidewall of the tyre in case of puncture, hence making the whole set up, run flat.

Right here goes.

OK, I must be a total bird-brain but I still can`t picture this set-up!You normally have a wheel and a tyre. With a T180 there is a metal band that goes inside to support the sidewall of the tyre in case of puncture, hence making the whole set up, run flat.
So, this metal band, where is it attached to? Obviously it can`t free float inside the wheel as it would make balancing impossible, it`s nothing to do with the tyre as has been said already and it`s not the wheel that`s special.
Again I`m sorry for my stupidity......
