HPI.....clarification needed

Please can someone verify something regarding HPI.

When you ring the lovely chappies up regarding an impending purchase which has worn 1 or more private plates previously (not an uncommon scenario for older luxury cars and exotica), do they provide the known history for:

a. the whole life of the vehicle?
b. only for a particular number plate duration?

When I have made a call previously, this is not the information I was given. I was told to provide a 'number plate' and that there were no guarantees or no information available for periods when other number plates adorned the vehicle.

They only guarantee the information they provide if you give them the VIN, not the reg. Its the car you check, not the plate.

and watch it for being stolen,i speak from previous experience when it was all checked and turned out to be a cloned car,they wriggled out of paying out despite advertising at the time that they gauranteed up to 10k
I of course was less than happy and way out of pocket.
