I don't mean addictions like sex, or eating etc, I mean being addicted to things that normal people are not addicted to, harmful things.

I was badly into gambling many years ago, as a teenager. I got out of it in the end simply because I ran out of money and had no way of getting any more. I was into it to the extent of putting my last fiver on a horse race, and wondering what I was going to eat that day if I didn't win.

Funnily enough, I can still remember some of the horse I won on, can't remember any of the losers though.

So, anyone else been addicted, and if so, how did you get out of it (if indeed you have)?

Nicotine. Been clean 10 years. Probably the least exciting story that will be posted on this topic.

Given how easy it is to trace people in real life from the internet, and given how insurance companies and potential employers may want to avoid people with, say, drug addictions (of any sort - insurance companies already take into account nicotine addiction), anyone who is genuinely addicted to anything 'harmful' should think twice before answering to this thread.

Of course, it's arguable as to whether certain things are 'harmful' - some people maintain opiate 'addictions' and continue normal, productive roles in society (even CEOs of big companies) but you'd probably describe those cases as 'dependence' since the harmful 'addictive' behaviour never manifests itself if you can always afford to feed your habit. Plenty of older people who were prescribed benzodiazepines for sleep decades ago, before the addictive potential of benzos was widely known, are still prescribed them by their doctors because the WDs would kill them - these people are effectively addicted to benzos, IMO - my grandmother is addicted to Mogadon, for example (nitrazepam).

I may or may not have some bad habits, but I wouldn't be admitting them on a public forum nowadays. It may be illegal for insurance companies to discriminate based on random internet trawling (not only due to the risk of getting the wrong person!) but I wouldn't take the chance. Also, in some industries, it's a small world and word gets around. Would *you* employ a known cokehead, for example? I've seen plenty of cokeheads in City financial recruitment agencies (note, I don't work in recruitment - I'm a target of these guys, not one of them) and many of them indulge during work to hype up that 'hard sell' on the telephone - they are loose cannon and can damage business reputation. I wouldn't employ one.

As an independent consultant, I *have* to be contactable on the internet, I simply *can't* be anonymous (even though I have the skills to be as anonymous as you can get), so I make the assumption that everything I write can be attributed to me, the person. And that anyone interested in me, the person, will be able to trace back anything to what is written by 'cyberface'.

The only reason I continue under the moniker 'cyberface' and not my real name is because I've grown attached to it, from the old hacker days of pseudonyms. And the only danger I get is when someone else on an internet forum I wouldn't ever use chooses the same name… if there was a forum dedicated to zoophilia, for example, and some nutter registered as 'cyberface' then it'd be a bit embarrassing for me. But IP addresses etc. can usually deal with that problem.

Ice cold Coca Cola in America. Seriously, I used to wake up in the night with a raging craving for a can.

One thing I *will* admit to, though - Starburst Choozers. Utterly addicted to the point of having to buy off the internet. Last week I rode my motorbike round *every* petrol station in a 10 mile radius to buy their entire stock of the red Choozers - Starburst appear to be phasing them out in favour of the orange 'tongue tanglers' which aren't as nice.

I've run out now, only got 'tongue tanglers' left and am rattling pretty bad.

Would that be 'heroine' as in the main female character in a book or film, or "heroine" as in Grace Darling etc?

Caffeine. I literally can't do without it. Tried as a volunteer on a friends psychology study and after 24 hours felt like I'd got the flu. Cheaper than smack though, eh?

You can buy a kilo of smack for the price of a Costa coffee.

Blood red orange juice. Any will do but my favourite was Tropicana Sanguinello. Used to make special trips to the shops just to ensure the stock I had in the fridge was always more than six litres. Unfortunately I haven't seen any for sale for over a year now.
