Toyota used to make great cars, 3 that spring straight to mind straight away are the Celica, MR2 and Supra.

If you look at their current range it's all diesel, electric or eco bullst, I can't believe a manfacturer can go from making some interesting cars to going that badly downhill and not making a single "sporty" car atall.

Discuss.

I agree 100% about their current range. If they don't water this down too much...

... there may be hope.

Run by accountants I'm afraid. Dull cars for dull people. Not like the Supra days, as you say.

Lexus IS-F?

Not quite a Toyota of course, but not far off.

Just a thought.....

Recently had the displeasure of sitting in a Toyota showroom. It was like hell's waiting room. Never seen so much blandness.

Surely something like a Celica/Supra type car with the hybrid internals of the lexus RX would be a great success.. Amongst the hairdresser types obviously.

The original MR2 was about 4 years ahead of the MX5. They came out in 1985. Also they were a bit more powerful too by about 20BHP, and IMO better looking.
The later Mk2 MR2 Turbos were about 100BHP more than the MX5, although handled rubbish, I dont think its a great comparison. I think the MR2 were great, although they took a step backwards with the MK3. Its just too girly......A bit like an MX5laugh

It's unfair to single out Toyota. Take Citroen for example; for years arguably the most innovative manufacturer, producing beautiful works like the DS, and wacky, interesting, technically creative stuff like the GS/BX/XM. They are a shadow of their former selves. Destroyed by Peugeot ownership, who did something not dissimilar to themselves.

I would say most car manufacturers turn out stuff that is less interesting and less diverse than they used to

They made their name in the eighties with ground breaking sports cars and coupes, sat on their laurels in the nineties and now have a range so drab that I'd rather have a Hyundai or Kia. Shame.

Most are going down the pan. The Avensis is a cure for insomnia. The new Accord looks like it was designed soleley for the American market. Most cars suffer from blancmangblanditis these days.

I bought their sport models in the 80's - MR2/Celica/Corolla GTs. Great cars with a great reliability record but since the mid 90's their model range had been so dull and bland styling to match. When they have pulled out of rallying their sport models have been so disappointing.

Come on My Toyota please bring us back a 'proper' Celica/Supra/Corolla GT/MR2.

You should read the opposing stories of Disney (almost run into oblivion by 'accountants') and Pixar (strategically driven to massive success by creatives). Pixar ultimately bought out and it's management-by-creatives philosophy adopted by Disney

Very true. You need accountants to run any company. Make sure you get proper accountants if you need strategic thinking. ie Management accountants not bean counters.

Well made though. If you're not into cars, why ever anyone would buy French as opposed to Toyota will forever be a mystery to me.

I think you will find a few are actually made in France. Mk3 MR2 definatly was. I remember the made in France stickers in the dealership.
