Deafening silence
Discussion
When I was in Oz I drove from Melbourne to Perth and while crossing the Nullabor we stopped at listened.
There was absolutely no sound whatsoever and it hurt our ears.
Would this be deafening silence or am I getting it confused with something else?
Google returns nothing like it.
Have you experienced it?

I was always under the impression that a deafening silence was a metaphorical term used when the silence of a particular moment means so much. Like the awkward silence after a really inappropriate comment for example.
I could be very wrong though.
You mean the silence that ensues after you accidentally let out a hair ruffling fart whilst your O/H is licking your love pump. Kind of the silence before the storm.I could be very wrong though.

Having camped on a Steppe in Mongolia and been in total, absolute darkness and silence.... I can appreciate what you mean.
The stars that night were utterly beautiful, the most peaceful place. But bloody freezing!

Being in the middle of of Namibian wilderness, looking up to see a sky sprinkled with millions of stars and hearing absolutely nothing, apart from the occasional distant lion roar. Feels amazing.Rach* said:

I had to wire up some equipment in an anechoic chamber once, 2 hours of absolutely no sound and no echo... total headf
k!
I've been into a few of these - I actually find it to be physically uncomfortable, even for a short period of time. I really wouldn't want to spend 2 hours in one.

Do you have Tinitis? Happens to me when somewhere really quiet, actually hurts my ears.
Rach* so jealous, closest I've been is northern Scotland, no lights, no noise. Love those situations.
Aye, we often stravaig up the hills, and all I should hear is silence.Rach* so jealous, closest I've been is northern Scotland, no lights, no noise. Love those situations.
Instead, I hear sirens, church bells, wind howling, waves crashing on the shore and various other noises

It's often had me looking about for people even though I know I'm alone.
