What a total waste of paper and time. Does anybody ever check them anymore?

I don't check them, I have to save them though, as I'm self employed and it all goes against tax smile

If one is buying something that is tax deductible, one needs the receipt. Also, if you want to return something, they often need the till receipt as proof of purchase. However, I think it should be 'ask for one if you need one', as 99% of the time I agree it's a waste of trees.

My local Kosovan car wash guys turnover about 150 cars a day. They have no idea what a receipt is.

About 25% of them I keep- for business and large items

The ones I chuck take up a tiny amount of space compared to junk mail

I dont mind till receipts much the ones that i do mind are those that dont have my switch card number edited out with **** and last 3 digits.

I always check to make sure and if I notice that I make a reminder to only use cash or not go there again.

So 80% of people roughly proberably use a credit/debit card..

Why not simply have a system whereby if you use a credit/debit card you are not issued with a reciept. Instead the purchase information is stored by the credit card company and can be accessed by you with a password loggin to a website somewhere..... Not too complicated given most of this information is already transmitted...

Receipts are NOT required..... any proof of purchase should be sufficient for a re-fund etc...

Better yet email you a copy of your reciept, something involving the credit card company taking data of what has been purchased.

I've got in the habit of checking my supermarket receipts after finding a mistake worth quite a few quid on one.
I'd say about half of my supermarket receipts have mistakes, usually small, for a few tens of pence (not enough to go all the way back for!)....add all this up across every transaction and you can see how they make their money!

The majority I dont, unless I need them for an expenses claim, or as already pointed out as proof of purchase for a larger item.
A number of places actually ask if you need a receipt, I have a feeling this is more to prevent litter from unwanted ones around their premises as I've seem them just put my unwanted one straight in the bin, so they're not doing it to save trees.

Seriously? You think that's how they make their money, theft?

Do you really think this isn't a conscious strategy, and that it helps their profits? seriously?

I only keep those I need for expenses claims (so that's quite a lot) and those that act as a 12 month guarantee, the rest in the shredder.......

Personally I think you should be given the choice.

While I'd want a receipt for my weekly shop to check, I don't need a receipt for a bottle of water or deck of smokes.

Rummaging through my jeans this morning, I threw away a handful of receipts for silly things.
