we're buying a new house and the previous owners have semi borded out the attic and put a couple of skylights in. There's no insulation up there currently but it's clean and dry, with a proper ladder and loft hatch etc.

This got me thinking - we're probably going to finish off the conversion work, but as no insulation has been put up there yet, this could be a good opportunity to get it kitted out as a cinema room.

Has anyone had experience of semi-soundproofing a room? Is it expensive, or just a bit of extra cost that we would incur fully boarding and plastering the room out anyway? Can you get the room setup acoustically to sound great etc?

I have no experience of soundproofing a cinema. However while shopping for underlay for some carpeting I have seen some 46db reducing underlay that was considerably higher than the others listed. This was still cheaper than the underlay you'll get at a carpet shop even after delivery!

Have a read on the AV forums for something called Green Glue. People have had pretty good results from this stuff. I think the idea is isolating the transfer of sound, but your best of reading on that forum.

Everything you need is below. The principles between home cinema rooms and recording studios are the same.

If you are slightly handy at DIY then it shouldn't be expensive although for a loft space you shouldn't expect miracles (you did say semi-soundproofed though I suppose).

First thing is too understand the difference between Acoustic treatment and sound isolation and the need for mass, mass and more mass for sound isolation.

Most of the guys on these forums are really friendly and very happy to answer questions. There are a number of really serious guys who design and build large studios for a living who are also very happy to help- a real privilege.

Happy reading and good luck!
