Hi all - we now know the real reasons behind why I struggled to keep the car in a straight line in both races - the diff top mount has broke - fractured in 2 places!! Attached a couple of pics!

Going to get a steel one fabricated this week to be stronger than the ali one fitted! If you guys racing Taz cars haven't checked recently, I'd deffo recommend having a look - ours has been welded in the past! If anyone else wants a steel one, give me a shout and I'll get a price for you!

At least the car will be stable at the rear for Mallory and the rest of the season though!!

Difficult to tell from those pics whether you have the later strenghthened diff beam. I've broken 2, one on a 350 and one on the 400. You can see the differences below:

7 - The one on ours is like the top one on the first pic (no bracing). Didn't realise you could get different versions of them. We can get one fabricated cheaper than buying one but will get the bracing like that added!

I would still speak to Steve Heath, as changing to steel gave some odd unexpected problems, could save you a lot of hassle.

You can't see the back of it to tell whether it's the reinforced version or not. Good price if so.

He did mention that he also broke a steel version .. but he will be worth
talking with an he has plenty of ideas to fix issues like this.

The one with the larger web is the later one; redesigned because of the failures near to the central bolts. The weak point then is near to the outer bolts and 7 has been unlucky enough to fail it there as well. I wouldn't fit too stiff a bush in there. Think carefully before you go for steel - they weigh enough as it is and steel is triple the density of ali. (OK you can use thinner sections but it'll still end up heavy.)

I think from memory Steve ended up with a tubular steel version, so ended up stronger but also a lot lighter than an exact steel copy.

Thanks guys. Steve should be ringing me back tonight hopefully to chat. That top mount is on it's way (the one way have no already has extra strength bolted on so will get that sorted, and the same guy has a diff cradle c/w nylon bushes which is coming too!). The damaged one is with the fabricator at the moment - will still get one made up as a spare just incase!

Just need the top mount bushes now (tapered ones) - not sure whether to go poly/nylon or solid mount those! Opinions..?

Thanks JR - as Leigh says might see about getting a tubular one made up which should be stronger again. Our's has most recently failed right on the outer section which is why we're thinking steel to overcome this.

Will the weight of steel make much difference on top of that diff?

Hi Adam - not sure as yet. It should be ready by the end of the week. It's a specialist fabrication company doing the work and they are aware of the application. More weight higher up isn't ideal, but tbh I'd rather that than an ali one that breaks all the time!!

Spoke to Steve Heath and he said he was able to twist/break steel ones but we haven't got half the power (ours is about 215bhp flywheel) he has, or the torque so shouldn't be too much of an issue?? It's going to be a stronger design with hopefully not too much additional weight smile

Two chances, as they say... lol

Did Steve not give you the option to get one made the same as his.

Leigh - didn't really go into that as he's re-designed the rear of his car so that he can get the mount out in place, and also re-designed the top buch mounts etc too so I imagine it would be a lot of work to get sorted!

I have got a copy of his wedge bible coming though!

Yes good idea to have a bible,

Be interesting to see how the steel one lasts.
I'll try and get those picture of my bare chassis and suspension sorted today.
Will post on Facebook
Be interesting to see a picture once you get it made.
