Not sure on the 280 but would think they are the same as the 350i best measure and compare to spec's below

350i = hardy spicer HS 166
400 = hardy spicer HS 179
HS166: 27mm x 81.80mm
HS179: 30.20mm x 106.33mm

These specs are from the GKN / Hardy Spicer catalogue, not just my measurements.
There's also a company that do heavy duty ones, I put these on the racer, they are sealed and don't have grease nipples, but I can't remember off hand the company name.

I think Hardy Spicer do / did an HD version, but I recall someone telling me (possibly Richard Thorpe) that they wouldn't easily fit into the yokes, although they are the correct size. Possibly beefed up around the cruciform.

For a road car, I would always fit versions with grease nipples.

I fitted mine off the car with a 10 ton press, so was not a problem for me, but they did take 4 ton, so trying to fit them on the car maybe more problematic.

Here's some information I recorded/documented from replacing halfshaft u-joints on my '85 280i. The original u-joints, the inner ones had failed quite seriously, like needle bearings falling out, at only 15K original miles. Nasty clunking, huge neg. camber. I bought Spicer "HD" sealed/non-greasable joints. They are different sizes. The inner ones are smaller than the outer ones. Looking at this again, I don't know that it's entirely clear as to which u-joints are which, and the measurements are non-metric.

found a company that could but not the h/s but still with the grease nipple.

I cannot help with the size you need, you will have to find that out before you ringing them as they normally deal with TR7/8

Just picked up some from this guy, ordered at 3.00pm arrived 9.00am next day, I was quoted over £160.00 from my local motor factor for four (Quinton Hazel not HS) so saved £100.

Finding hardy spicer, think they are a GKN brand.
Think GKN have a website with the full catalogue, but you need dimensions, type and grade information to look it up. There is an explanation on the specifications in the catalogue as well.
On the continent (Belgium in my case) there is no issue in ordering any of them, so asume it must be possible in the UK then as well....
